Remember Rizzo?
Posted on September 24, 2009 in Food and Drink, Hounds, Life, the Universe and Everything, Oddities by Jay21 Comments »

RizzoHat-1-CTBH

Do you remember Rizzo? The Very Lazy Greyhound? I’m sure regular readers will remember him, because he’s such a character, but if not, you can read about him here.

Today I logged onto Greytalk and found out that Rizzo has had a birthday! He is ten years old, and still as cute and lovable as ever. Seems he’s so cute, he gets his own birthday party, and even his own cake!

RizzoCake-1-CTBH

That’s his girlfriend Kiwi with him, hoping for a taste of that cake herself, and I’m assured that she did get her share. Well, it’s a bit rude to scoff the whole cake yourself, even if it is your party, and Rizzo is far too gentlemanly for that.

RizzoKiwiCake-1-CTBH

I doubt they played party games or drank too much lemonade, even though they look like kids in their Sponge Bob hats, but it looks like they had a good time, doesn’t it?

RizzoKiwiHats-1-CTBH

Yes. I’m inclined to agree. Completely, totally, utterly spoiled. The pair of them!  Just as it should be.

As well as celebrating his birthday, Rizzo is also celebrating another very important milestone. He is now one year cancer-free.  He’s a big, bouncy, mad puppy-dog of a ten-year old, much as my little Pirate Jack was.  And Kiwi is a quiet, gentle, elegant girl who just loves to sleep – very similar to The Princess.

M, their human servant, tells me: ‘Kiwi basically deals with Rizzo’s wild nature and usually rolls over and ignores him, like any older, annoyed sister would do!’

That’s a little different from Princess Renie – she would yip and bark at Jack to keep him in line (from the comfort of her bed, naturally), but for all that, just like these two beautiful dogs, they loved each other and were very good friends.

Rizzo and Kiwi will be going to Dewey Beach this year, so hopefully I’ll meet up with them there and say hi to the lovely Rizzo and his girl in person.

If I see someone in the distance with a Very Lazy Greyhound slung over their shoulder like a sack of potatoes, I’ll know exactly who they are.

And do you know what? It’s not until I see other greyhounds that I realise how bloody fat Bert is. Maybe I won’t have the cake recipe after all!

Mara – Thanks! I love all the pictures, but yes, that last one is very lovely. Happy dogs!

Maria – I love doing Rizzo posts! And as you see, my readers love him too. :)

Let me know where you’re staying in Dewey, or PM me your mobile number and I’ll give you a ring! It would be great to meet! Or – when I get the address of our condo from PdeD, I’ll send it to you and you can drop in.

Kate – Frowned upon? I think they’re actually useful in bright sun. Remember greyhounds’ field of vision is actually much wider than other breeds, so the sun may bother them more. UV rays contribute to cataracts, and pannus (an eye condition that greyhounds are known to get and which can cause blindness if not treated – it’s auto-immune IIRC). Am I helping your argument yet? ;)

    Sistertex – He’s a real character, even for a greyhound, isn’t he?

Carolina – Isn’t he lovely? You know, some greyhounds really don’t mind dressing up. Mine have always looked depressed if I put hats on them. They just stand there motionless, waiting for me to take them off again. LOL!

Baino – Yep – he is! Bless …!

Babs – Perfect, isn’t it? I love those teeth!

EM – Hm .. now I’m going to have to search out some Beautiful Bertie photos and take a look! I don’t remember seeing him and thinking he was fat, though. But about the cake – I’m afraid it’s a human one. Heather is going to send me a dog cake recipe though! I believe they come with cream cheese frosting and MUCH less sugar than the human ones.

Tuli – Thanks! See my answer to Heather, below!

Heather – Yes, do! I’ll put it in a little blog, then people can pick it up if they want it. Thanks! :)

Shrinky – They are, aren’t they? I love them. Rizzo is one of my favourite Greytalk hounds, and there are literally thousands on there. He’s a very special guy.

Kathy – She does, doesn’t she? It won’t perhaps surprise you to know that in some areas of the US, owners of fawn greys have to put hunter’s orange jackets on them to go out into their own yards for fear they’ll be shot by overenthusiastic amateurs.

    Cute aren’t they, though? :D

Don’t make me cry! That’s horrible! I would do it, though. Anything to protect my pet.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your comments readers- and in the most respectful way, thinking how they sound in an English accent. Now just picture me with a strong Boston accent and you’ve got it ;) Rizzo is like a cartoon character- and they broke the greyhound mold when they made him for sure. He’s always playing and being cute, I don’t know when he has time to sleep. He spent the day at the beach yesterday doing nothing so he’s tired from that – and did sleep in! LOL! Yes, that was a cake for human consumption. They got some frosting and then homemade doggie ice cream treats instead. Thanks again everyone and have a wonderful day.

Kathy – Of course you would. And it’s the reason I used to put a bright yellow bandana on The Pirate when we went over the fields in autumn, with him offlead. He looked the same colour as a small deer or a large fox. Better safe than sorry!

SJ Anne – He is handsome, isn’t he? Such a character!

Sandy – I think I might feel the same, but twenty-four is a wonderful age for any dog, isn’t it? It’s always hard to lose them though, and I know how you miss her. :(

Ruth – Poor Smokey. And I thought you loved him. LOL!

Maria – Funny how doing nothing seems to wear them out, isn’t it? It’s like when I take Sid to a meet and greet. He does nothing but lie there and get petted and he’s exhausted! LOL!

Interestingly, only five of the commenters are English. The rest come from all over – Australia, the Netherlands, the US.

Thanks for letting me use Rizzo’s pictures and his story. As you can see, everyone loves him! :)
