Well, Johnny Depp is in the news this week, bless his little cotton socks. Not only for stuff relating to his movie roles* but for a kindness to an old friend.
Maybe you don’t know this, but Johnny credits Nicolas Cage with getting him into acting in the first place. He was a struggling musician living on the edge of things in LA when he met up with Nic, and they became close friends. At that point, Mr Cage was doing very nicely, thankyouverymuch, but Johnny was struggling until Nicolas suggested he try acting, and introduced him to his own agent who got Johnny the role of being eaten by the mattress in Nightmare on Elm Street, and, well, you know how it went. The rest is history.
But now poor Mr C is in deep financial shit. There have been foreclosures and auctions of his properties and he owes somewhere in the region of five or six million USD in tax arrears. He’s suing his financial advisor for mismanagement of his funds, but in the meantime, the tax-man is tapping his fingers. The very fingers that are itching to get inside Nic’s bank account and empty it for him.
Enter the hero.
Now it appears that Mr Depp has told his old buddy Nic that he’ll take care of that little cash-flow problem for him, for old times’ sake. Rumour has it that Johnny feels he owes his whole acting career to Nicolas Cage and now he sees a chance to pay him back. He does these things very quietly, and will probably be annoyed that it leaked out, but that’s what kind of man he is.
Doesn’t that make you feel all warm and fuzzy? He’s a real star, isn’t he?
* There’s speculation that Pirates 4 (heaven help us) will be shot in Puerto Rico, and also that Johnny Depp will star with Angelina Jolie in his next movie project ‘The Tourist’. Oh, and there’s also speculation that Mr D will pull out of Pirates because of Dick Cook being ousted from Disney. I bet they’ll regret that move.
He is a great guy isn’t he…. I knew I liked him for a reason.
Did you know that Nick Cage adopted a Greyhound? I knew the lady, group, who did the adoption. We were all very hopeful that he would become a Adopt a Greyhound spokesperson. But then something happened and he returned the Greyhound.
Just a little side story there.

Wow, I didn’t know they had that relationship! I did hear of Cage’s financial problems, but had no idea that Johnny owed his career to him! Now, that’s what I call a true friend! Amazing! But did we expect anything less?

I know that owing the tax man $6.7m would keep me awake at night (mostly wondering how the hell I made enough money to OWE that much !?!) but he has/had real estate all over the world that could’ve easily paid it off. The sale of a couple of New Orleans properties got him $4.3m alone.
Still nice of Mr. Johnny to have stepped in if needed. Of course if you have his ear (not literally even though you’ve been close to it a few times), maybe you could ask him to send a few $$$’s my way to help eke out my paltry pension. After all I got into (internet) piracy thanks to him !

As it seems to be all CNN videos I’m seeing black boxes for, I’m thinking it’s a distribution or copyright problem. Your playlist says I am limited for some tracks due to licensing restrictions.

Baino – I think when you have that much money, you can’t keep track by yourself and they must leave it all to their financial advisors. Isn’t that how so many hugely successful pop stars of the past ended up stacking shelves or running a corner shop?
Silverback – Well, yeah, I know, and that’s why I called it a ‘cash-flow problem’. They usually have a lot of assets … but some don’t. There are people around who used to be famous and successful and are now on their uppers. Still nice of him though, eh?
