I’m a bit late reporting this one, but since it’s now officially Christmas week, I though I should perhaps do something Christmassy. I’m well know among my friends and relatives for hating the fact that Christmas comes earlier and earlier each year, and refusing to have any truck with it before December, but this year … let’s face it, I’m late getting started.
Anyway, last week, Sid and I took ourselves off to the Wyvale Garden Centre at Crowland where the very kind people there occasionally allow Kama’s Cave greyhound rescue to set up a table and mug the public for funds*. We take dogs along to get the word out that greyhound make wonderful, calm, gentle pets, and everyone has a good time – including the dogs, who love all the attention.
Since it was a Christmas fundraiser, one of the lovely ladies running the show had made Santa snoods to sell for the dogs, so I bought one for Sid, and I think you’ll agree he looked adorable in it – if a trifle silly. He didn’t mind. The only time he had just a little trouble with it was when he got an itch. He happened to be eating a piece of rawhide chew at the time which someone had given him, and he didn’t want to drop it, so we were treated to the hilarious sight of a large three legged greyhound trying to scratch his ear through a fluffy wool hat, while trying to keep his chew clamped firmly in his teeth.
Well, you all know that stretchy-face grimace that dogs do when they scratch. Pretty soon the rawhide fell out and he couldn’t decide whether to keep trying to find that itch or stop and look for his snack. After I’d finished falling about laughing, I gave his ear a good rub and found his rawhide for him. Yes, yes, I know. Utterly ruined … but what can you do?
Oh, and Sid’s companion that day was Naughty Nellie, the beautiful svelte black-and-shiny queen of the santa pyjamas. Sid loves Naughty Nellie with a passion, bless him.
Such a sweet, innocent, pretty girl. But I’m told she’s a counter surfer and bin-diver extraordinaire and has a penchant for underwear. Looks can be so deceptive.
Oh, and the tombola table plus the random donations raised over a hundred pounds that day! That will help pay for the Christmas dinners for the dogs .. not to mention the boring stuff like medical expenses and, you know, kennel space and all.
*Without charging a penny, unlike Rivergate.

Very cute although Sid looks a little embarrassed in the first shot! Good that they didn’t charge you to set up camp this time, I thought that was particularly mean. Amazingly I’m actually all ‘done’ for Christmas with the exception of the food shopping. Better late than never I say!

Sandy – Thank you!
I hope your Christmas is a good one too. Peaceful and happy.
Mara – Thank you! I think he’s adorable, of course, but it’s nice to hear others say it too!
Babs – I don’t know why, but more people dress greyhounds up than any other breed bigger than a dachshund. I suppose it’s probably that they’re so tolerant and they look so cute! The ONLY reason I do it is that it grabs people’s attention and makes them smile. Anything to get the greyhounds noticed and the funds rolling in.
Petra – I wouldn’t bother trying. Rawhide isn’t that nice really, or so I’m told. ROFL! Merry Christmas to you, too!
Jientje – Thanks! You too!
Baino – He should have been thankful he wasn’t in the full Santa suit! LOL! Well done for being all organised. I still have a ton to do!
I think he would look wonderful in the Santa suit!!!! I’m really not sure about snoods – i know they keep their ears warm – particularly with all the SNOW that we have at the moment but Hippie looks very strange in hers!!!
kate´s last blog ..It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..
Kate – I have several snoods, and none of my previous dogs got along with them at all, although Renie would tolerate it. Sadly, Sid – who would wear one happily to keep warm – has such a muscular neck that they don’t fit! The knitted one is the only one that works on him.
Ahhh, they are so cute! And ready.
Happy HOlidays!
