Macro Monday – Atlas
Posted on December 20, 2009 in Hounds, Life, the Universe and Everything, Oddities by Jay23 Comments »

AtlsBnch-800cjs

Well, that’s what it says, isn’t it? Atlas.

So what is it, this mystery Macro Monday object? Can you guess?

I’ll tell you this: One morning last week, Sid and I drove to one of the city’s ‘green spaces’ for our morning walk. It’s a pleasant area, with a stream running through it, and a lake on which ducks, geese, swans and moorhens swim. There are also cycle paths, and several footpaths which cross little wooden bridges. I like Cuckoo’s Hollow, because while it’s not huge, the way it’s laid out with smallish areas of grass surrounded by copses of mixed woodland trees makes it an interesting place which feels bigger than it is. Do you get a mental picture?

It’s an area where people walk dogs, birdwatchers come to spot woodpeckers and bramblings, sparrowhawks and great crested grebes. Kids cycle through on their way to school. Small children come to feed the ducks.

So what else might you find in such a place?

Litter bins? Yes, very good! There are indeed litter bins, but none which say ‘Atlas’ on them.

Signposts? Regrettably few. I’ve managed to get myself lost here more than once.

Benches? Ah, now you’re talking! This is a picture of one of the metal bolts in a wooden park bench. Actually, there are two in the shot, though one is far away and fuzzy. It’s a good, solid, serviceable bench, and as you can see, it’s been there a long time. Long enough to have several coats of different coloured paint, most of which has now worn off.

I wonder what colour they’ll paint it next?

I was going to say there was a lot of paint splashes on it. Who would have thought that there was supposed to be a lot more paint. Lovely shot :)

I love wandering in green spaces like the one you just described. And occasionally I need to rest on one of those benches, but had never looked at the bolts holding it together. Nice shot!!

Chipped off paint, the grain of the wood. Two of my favorite ingredients for a macro. The nail with that intriguing name on it … and you. YOU turned this into a perfect composition. Love it!

cool shot, nice depth of field. My first guess was something like those things that USGS puts in the ground (what are they called?) but knew it wasn’t quite that.

I like this image. The perspective and the out of focus background are very creative and work well.

Babs – I can’t believe how worn the paint is on that one. I would think it’s inferior wood, maybe, or perhaps they just didn’t prepare it properly?

DBM – Haha! I do love fooling people! ;)

Villager – Had you fooled too, huh? LOL! Thanks for the nice comment! :)

Müge – Thank you! Merry Christmas to you, too!

Lisa’s Chaos – I have rested on those benches, for sure! It’s a real little oasis of countryside in the city, but you can end up walking further than you think!

Jientje – You are much too kind, but thank you! Such a very nice comment. :)

Jill – I don’t know what they’re called either! But thanks for the compliment!

John McDevitt – High praise! I do admire your work, so I’m really pleased you like mine! :)

Meleah – Thanks! Yes, taking things out of context makes them hard to see properly sometimes, doesn’t it?

Colleen – Thank you! I do like details, and it’s satisfying when a picture turns out so well!

Ha! I recognized it almost instantly since we’ve just been sanding & staining a given-to-us picnic table at work!! I’ll have to see if ours say Atlas on them!

Cute, very cute but you make me feel good. Why? Because the bench looks damp! It reminds me to feel grateful for a warm dry climate and a standard fan. Have a wonderful Christmas Jay. Hope your boys are home and you celebrate with fun and laughter. I’ve loved your blog for a couple of years now and look forward to more and better in 2010. God what will we call it the ‘tens’?

Very nice, original photo. At first blush, I thought it was a manhole cover too. Thanks for the puzzle – and for giving us the answer. I don’t think I would have guessed it in a long time.

I would never have guessed without reading on, Jay! Cuckoo’s Hollow — what an interesting name; I would never have guessed it for such an idyllic setting! It does sound lovely!

Have you seen the coming attractions to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland with Hubba Hubba?! It’ll be coming out in March 2010 and looks amazing! Johnny as the Mad Hatter looks most convincing!

Want to wish you and your loveds a healthy and Happy Christmas, Jay! Petra xo

Jeannine – Well, that’s just cheating! ROFL!

I bet it doesn’t say Atlas, but let me know if it does!

Baino – Thank you! As you know, I love your blog, too! As to what we’ll call the tens, I suspect, just that. Or maybe the twenty-tens? We’ll think of something!

Yes, the boys will both be here! It’ll be fun. I hope you have a good one, too!

Carolina – Thanks! And a Merry Christmas to you and yours, too! :)

Sandy – It could easily have been a manhole cover! But it wasn’t. ;)

Dutchbaby – It’s good to make life interesting, don’t you think? LOL! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

JD – Why, thank you! That’s a nice compliment! :)

Petra – Thanks! Yes, it is a lovely name, isn’t it?

I’ve seen a couple of trailers for Alice. I’m looking forward to a Johnny who can smile wickedly and say ‘Naughty, naughty!’ in that tone of voice! ;)

    Merry Christmas!

Love this shot Jay – the texture of the flaking paint and the metal bolt are fantastic! This is a very cool photograph – very nicely done!
