Macro Monday – Guess what?
Posted on December 28, 2009 in Oddities, The Home Front by Jay26 Comments »

MM-KT-2-800cjs

It’s Macro Monday again, and I have another puzzle for you. Some of you will recognise it instantly, others may not. It’s a very common item in most households, and I only photographed it today because one of my Christmas gifts was a nice new macro lens for my bridge camera, and I wanted to see what it could do.

It’ll take a little getting used to. I need to work out how best to light things, for instance, because I left it far too late today and the light outside was gone, so all I had was ordinary indoor lighting plus the ‘daylight’ flourescent anglepoise which I use for my jewellery making.

This is probably far too easy, but take a guess. What is it?

Check back tomorrow for the answer – I’ll put it in the comments.

Wow – I think you stumped me! It looks like material, so I am thinking maybe a pot holder or towel. Nice photo regardless, and I’ll bet you enjoy the new macro lens.

I’m so hopeless at these things. Exciting about the lens though. I got a 50mm for my birthday and really haven’t ‘stretched’ it yet so maybe I’ll go a macroing if the rain holds off. All I can think of at the moment is a ’tile’ of some sort or a trivet. I’ll be back you big tease!

Love the photo! I think it’s toilet paper or a paper towel. Am I right?!

I’m inclined to agree with Colleen. Very well done. Your lighting worked out quite well.

I agree with Colleen, too. One of those, or perhaps a napkin. Nice shot, keep it up!

For some reason I immediately thought of a biscuit. Just a simple biscuit! I am right aren’t I? I know I’m right, I have to be right. I want a biscuit now… I’ll stop right here!

Villager – Hmm.. it is kind of material, so good guess!!

I do love to take pictures of tiny things, so yes, I will enjoy the lens!

Meleah – Cloth again – pretty good! Close … ;)

Baino – No, not a tile, though it is a kind of tile pattern, isn’t it?

I love macro lenses. But I just looked up how much it would cost to add a ring flash and I’m still picking myself up from the floor!! Yikes!

    Birgitta – Thank you! :)

Colleen – Excellent guess – see the answer further down the list!

John McDevitt – Thank you! I had a little vignetting, but I cheated and cropped it out.

Dew Drops – Yes, they certainly are fun! I love macro.

Lynda – Cleaning cloth? Close! Very close!

Dimple and Mere – Napkin .. another great guess!

Jama – Definitely a tile pattern, isn’t it? But no, not a tile!

Mara – Oh, how I wish it were a biscuit! I’d eat it for sure. All that crisp icing. Yum! But no, not a biscuit! LOL!

Mara – Another great guess, but no, not a pot-holder either!

AND THE ANSWER IS … – Don’t look if you’re still guessing -

It’s a piece of paper kitchen towel, the heavy kind which is sold more for cleaning and mopping up than for food use. I loved the embossed pattern on it, which is faintly coloured with blue, and I thought it might come out rather well as a macro. When it turned out to be such a nice close-up and ‘flat’ looking (rather than rounded as it is on the roll) I thought it also might make a fun puzzle!

So, Colleen (and all those who agreed with her) you were right! Well done! And thank you all for playing. :)

Well unfortunately I looked at the answer before guessing – I was leaning toward a ceramic tile but the fact that you can see the blue through the white suggested something papery. Nice photograph – looks like you got a good lens for Christmas!

Very cool macro. We got daughter a nice camera for Christmas and she has two lenses so far; but macro lenses are expensive so perhaps for her birthday…

    Awesome shot Jay!

It’s a paper towel? I love how everything is in focus! Makes me think of snowflakes. :)

Great macro. It does look like some mosaic tile work than a paper towel. Have fun with your new lens.

Nope – have looked everywhere and don’t appear to have one of these in my house. *Gulp*… hope that doesn’t mean I’m uncivilized or something worse. It’s not a drain cover is it? I’ve got one of those(!) – just not as attractive.

Sandy – Aah, cards for next year! I usually do that, but I haven’t been into town yet! :P

Dave – Thanks! Yes, I think I did!

EG Wow – You might think so, but when there’s a spill you don’t look at the pattern!

Maureen – Yes, macro lenses are pricey, but you should also check out the cost of the ring flash they need if you want to light something properly. Yikes!

LIsa’s Chaos – Yep, a paper towel! Isn’t life in close-up fun? Thank you! It’s always hard to get a full width object in proper focus, isn’t it?

Marvin – That’s what I liked about the subject. It reminded me of tiles, fabric, wallpaper, all kinds of things, and yet it’s so much tinier than most.

Geri – Hahaha! You are funny! You mean you really don’t have any kitchen towel in your house? LOL! It IS like a drain cover, too, isn’t it!! I hadn’t even thought of that.

  24. on 30 Dec 2009 at 10:27 pm24Baino

Ah in that case I can be forgiven. I don’t use paper towels so wouldn’t have a clue what their patterns look like up close. Nice one!

I instantly guessed paper towel but when I read the toilet paper and napkin guesses, I lost my confidence and decided they were right and I was wrong. I do this all the time. I’m way too suggestible when it comes to these puzzles. Your lens looks like a winner.

Baino – I don’t know how you manage without it, but of course we all did, not so long ago! I try to buy recycled, but OH won’t have it. He wants the good stuff, so I leave him to choose these days.

Dutchbaby – You should have more faith in yourself! LOL! Well done for guessing correctly, anyway. :)
