Macro Monday – are you ready?
Posted on January 11, 2010 in Oddities, The Home Front by Jay50 Comments »

MM-3-750cjs

I was actually taking pictures of something else entirely when I saw this photo opportunity and grabbed it. Rather lovely, isn’t it? But what is it?

I hope it’s OK using Macro Monday to pose these little challenges, because I’m really enjoying it, and it seems that quite a lot of you are, too! I guess as long as I include a macro picture and a link, I’m within the rules, right?

Let’s start guessing.

Could it be a planet?  Unlikely, since I took this picture myself. And it is an actual object in my immediate environment, not an illustration in a book or anything tricksy like that.  And again, this is exactly what it looks like, close up.

Animal, vegetable or mineral? You’re on your own there. No more clues – I’ve already told you it’s not a planet. What more do you want?

So.  Off you go, folks!  Give it your best shot.  To me it looks easy, but then, I have the advantage of knowing what it is!

The answer is in the comments as usual, but for those of you who don’t want to wade through my answers to everyone, take a look at this.

It is glass and has moisture condensing (or melting). The background is pebbly and looks like a hard surface. I’m going to say it’s an outdoor light with condensate or melt on the glass globe.

Once again you have me scratching my head, trying to figure it out. It does look like water condensation on glass, but I’m not sure about the blue. It almost looks like the inside of an oven, or a pan. Maybe the oven light, but I don’t know why it would have water on it. Nice photo regardless!

A very interesting photo, it reminds me a bit of an experiment I was doing a few days ago with a water drop on fabric. It looks like a cold glass of water with a melting ice cube sitting on a granite counter top to me. But then I know how macros can be deceiving sometimes. Great macro.

It’s glass, it’s upside down and it has condensation in it.
Could be a milk bottle on it’s side taken from the bottom, or a jar upside down draining.

Oh, I’m not especially good at these, but I’ll try, as your photo is so artistic.

It looks to be not a full sphere, but perhaps a round clear plastic or glass lid to something. It seems to have an indentation on its rounded surface, so I’m thinking that might be where a straw or something else might go.

EVERYONE – Thank you all for being such good sports and playing along. I hope you enjoyed trying to solve the challenge as much as I enjoyed setting it!

I’ve added the answer to the bottom of the post, so if you can either go back and click the link, or you can scroll down, because I’m adding it to the bottom of my answers to you all.

Thanks for playing! See you next time. :)

Trish – You is smart! Yes, it’s condensation on glass, but what sort of glass? Not a drinking glass..

John McDevitt – Not a bad guess at all! Yes, it’s condensation on glass, but not an outdoor light. Pretty good though!

January – Nope, not a water droplet, though there is some water in there! :)

Dimple – Again, not a bad guess, and partly right!

Teresa – Gardening With Soule – Thanks! I’m glad you liked it!

Paul Wynne – Nope, not a light bulb, either!

Jama – Well, it is moisture on glass! But not that kind of glass.

Toby – Thanks! But no, not a drinking glass. ;)

Kama – No, not a glass bowl! Nearly, but no.

Geri – Hahaha!! Blob of cream! LOL! No, and not a glass bowl either!

  43. on 12 Jan 2010 at 9:42 pm43Jay

Leeuna – How kind you are! Thank you! :) And you are at least partially right, because it is glass, and there is moisture on it. Well done!

Colleen – Thanks! Dimple and you are both nearly right! It’s glass. Not a bowl though!

LisasChaos – I’m so glad you approve! And with your guess of a glass ball you’re close – so close! But no. LOL!

Kaytabug – Oooh, the closest yet, I do believe! Yes, it’s a granite (well, okay, Corian) countertop, and it is sweating glass. Great guess!

Ingalill – No, not a lid. Not a bad guess though! :)

Christina, Sweden and Maia – You’re both nearly right! Glass on a countertop in the kitchen – all right. You just haven’t guessed what!

Sandy – It’s glass, but not a lid!

Gattina – Thanks! Sorry you had no clue. Scroll down – the answer will be there in a minute!

Maria – Now that’s an interesting guess! Yes, it’s glass, and yes, there’s condensate on it … but no, it’s not asphalt. ;)

  44. on 12 Jan 2010 at 9:52 pm44Jay

CarolynUSA – Well, it’s certainly a Corian countertop, which is nearly granite! And there’s condensation, but no carbonated drink!

Meleah – Oooh, good one! But no. LOL! Not a door knob, although I kind of wish I had glass doorknobs.

Kim – Blue moon? Now that would have been something! LOL!

Jientje – Bloodsucker jars .. now why didn’t I think of that? Sadly, I don’t have any, so no, it’s not that!

Villager – Another great, and creative, guess! It does look like the inside of the oven, doesn’t it? But it’s not! Tis glass though. ;)

Squirrel Queen – A glass with an ice cube in it, on a granite worktop. Hmm. Good one!! And I can see the ‘ice cube’ now, too – even though there isn’t one! :P

Liz – Nope, not the bottom of a milk bottle, either. We don’t have those anymore. It’s a pity, because I’m sure that would have made a great macro!

Babs – No, neither of the above. That’s two for the outdoor light globe, though! :)

Granny Grimble – All excellent thoughts, but all wrong! It is glass, though!

EthelMaePotter – Then, like the majority, you’re partly right! LOL!

  45. on 12 Jan 2010 at 9:59 pm45Jay

Gena – A Christmas bauble? Actually, I did take some pictures of those, but no, this isn’t one of them!

Sandy – Thanks for the answers! Like everyone here, then, I was partly right! LOL!

Walter – No, not a water droplet, though I can see that it might look like one!

Sistertex – Not a bad guess – but no. Although something just out of the dishwasher or the freezer might look a lot like this!

Michelle – Yes, it is condensation on a glass object! Right so far, now what’s the glass object?

Jenn of Many Cabbages – Very creative guess! I can see where you think there’s an indentation, but actually there isn’t one! It’s quite smooth.

Teresa – Interesting guess, but no! I don’t even have one of those. ;)

Petra Michelle – Condensation for sure .. not Sid’s bowl though! And not carpet, either. :D

Strawberry Jam Anne – I’ve got no idea how I’d get a picture of a half a grapefruit through a glass bowl, either! Hmm. Maybe I’ll try that sometime! Sorry, but you’re wrong. It is glass though!

CameoRoze – Not a fishbowl, but it is glass, and it is a granite (Corian, next best thing) counter!

  46. on 12 Jan 2010 at 10:03 pm46Jay

AND THE ANSWER IS: A rather lovely glass vinegar bottle which I’ve had for years. When I took it down from the shelf, it was dusty, and contained a little bit of vinegar in the bottom. The shelf is above the cooker, so yes, the glass had ‘sweated’ – there was condensation from the moisture in the vinegar on the inside of it.

The counter top is Corian, not granite, but very well done to those who guessed sweating glass, condensate or granite. I think you can all consider yourself winners!

Thanks for playing – I had fun, and I hope you did too! :)
