Ha! Let’s see if you clever people can solve this Macro Monday poser! Tee hee.
Some of you will not have one of these in your homes – quite probably most of you won’t have one. In fact, I’m not even sure if people outside the UK even have these things in this particular form. However, most of you will have at least seen one, and I would imagine your parents or grandparents would have had one, even if you don’t.
Now, to be strictly honest, I have to tell you that if you saw this by full daylight, the metal would look a lot lighter and more of a gunmetal grey. The picture was taken in my lounge in that particular mix of incandescent bulb lighting* and firelight which give things such a rosy glow in a photograph. But I haven’t cleaned and polished it, or smartened it up in any way, it is just as I’d last used it – and at the moment we’re using it several times a day, for more than half the week.
There. In deference to the fact that it is difficult, especially since not all of you will have one in your possession, I’ve given you some nice clues up there. Have at it!
The answer, as always, will appear tomorrow in the comments, and I’ll add a link to a picture of the whole thing.
*In the lounge we have uplighters in which those dreaded, hideously dull and depressing energy-saving halogen bulbs won’t fit.
I forgot to add the link to the ‘Bloggers for Haiti’ page. Here it is. Shelterboxes are a wonderful thing!
Well, it seems this wasn’t quite as difficult as I’d thought! Here’s the answer!

A fire poker on it’s stand?
My uplighters have energy saving bulbs in now – I found some with the right fitting – every little helps!!!!
I think its something to do with a companion set too!!!

part of a curtain rod?

Fire poker on it’s stand was my first idea too, but neither my parents nor my grandparents have/had an open fire. Gasfires don’t need poking. In fact, I would strongly recommend not to poke in a gasfire.
Exciting puzzle again!

A fireplace poker would be my guess too. Great puzzle!

I am sooooooo bad at these, Jay! So far, I’ve batted zero!
“At the moment we’re using it several times a day, for more than a half week?” Hmmm…a butter churner? I don’t know, Jay! Help!

Hmmm is this a yoke? Lovely piece of macro thanks for sharing!

Welllll…
Ok hearth tools was my first guess, but I see lots of people thought that. Then I thought a ‘butler’, or quilt hanger (holder).
However in the end, I’m thinking pot hanger, to hang something to warm over the fire.
and if I guess enough things…I just might hit it.
A fire poker! I used to have one when I had a real fireplace. Now we have a silly little gas fireplace with a blue flame that doesn’t give off much heat. REALLY! For that kind of ambiance, I could stand by my stove!!

I can’t see the sense of wooden hearth tools? Then I have nothing to offer.

Goodness, I have NO IDEA what this one could be!

A fine composition. I think it’s a fire poker too. Or the top of one hanging from a wooden hook.

A fireside tool was also my first guess. You say that people outside the UK possibly wouldn’t have them in this form, so that confuses me, but I’ll stick with a fireside tool.

This is fun

I must try to guess – a wild guess – well what is the word in English????
is it a yoke – a thing you put on your shoulders to help carry buckets of water
?????

I have no idea but it is but the photo looks great.
Very cool! it reminds me of an umbrella handleo r some sort of handle hangin over a railing or the rail of a chair! Love it! Great macro!
Kiki~
I admit it – I’ve thought about it all day and I’m STUMPED! I wouldn’t have guessed metal if you hadn’t told us it was. It looks more like wood to me. A fireplace set would be too obvious given your clues…wouldn’t it?
Hmmm, some type of candle holder to carry and light the way?

I’ve no idea that that is, if it’s something for the fireplace like those guessed by the other commenters, then I have not seen it here, since it’s always hot here. :p

No idea!

Wow, love the details and shadows on this! Hmm… what could it be… a plant hanger? Kind of makes me think of some sort of latch or hinge! That’s my best guess.

I was convinced that it was wood and a part of a rocking chair, lol ! Now I read it’s metal, then I have no clue !

You really threw me off with the not seen outside the UK in this form part. All of the fireplace tools that I have, or have seen, have wooden handles protect ones hands from the heat of the metal.
Since I have no idea I will go for the wild guess and it’s used to open and close the flue!

I confess, I have no clue … and am looking forward to finding out. Alas, I see no answer in comments for your ‘House’ post but I do enjoy the show and have since the beginning. Thanks for dropping by and leaving the link back here. It’s nice to meet you, virtually

Everyone – What a bunch of clever clogs you are! Many of you solved this one, or came very close! The answer is now at the end of the original post – go take a look!
Thanks for taking part once again. I hope you’ll join me again next week!
Taffy’s Mum – First one in, and first one right! Well done!
Kate – Well done to you, too!
We haven’t found the right bulbs yet, but trust me, OH is looking!
Trish – No, not a curtain rod. Bad luck!
Carolina – Ha – no, don’t go poking that gas fire!
Helena – Good guess!
Petra – A butter churner! Hahaha! Nope!
Kim – I can see that it might look like one, but no, not a yoke!
Sistertex – Close, very close!
Colleen – Good guess! Well done!
Baino – Ah, but they’re not wood – though I do see that the metal does have a wood-like grain to it.
Meleah, Dawn, Birgitta, and Maia – Answer up above, if you’ve given up!
John McDevitt – Thanks! Yep, you’re right!
Babs – You got it, too! And no, it’s not wood, just looks a bit like it in that photo.
Photo CHIP – A yoke? No, but you’re the second one to guess that!
Kiki – Very interesting guess! But sadly, not correct.
Villager – Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one!
Lisa’s Chaos – Another great guess, but also wrong!
Jama – You’re excused. You won’t have seen one! Answer up above in the post.
Sammi and Gattina – No, and no – but thanks for trying!
Squirrel Queen – How interesting! I’ve never seen a set with wooden handles, but it would make sense!
Happily Retired Gal – Hi there! Thanks for coming on over and taking part! I always put the answer to my puzzles in the original post, but not until everyone has had a chance to guess.
Glad to meet another House fan!
Sandy – I can see that! But no, it’s not a chair join! Answer now appears at the bottom of the post!
At first, I thought it was wood, too.
I admit I had no clue until I began reading the comments, then I realized a fireplace tool was correct. And we DO have them in the US – I had a beautiful antiqued bronze set sitting next to my GAS LOG fireplace for many years, until I decided it looked absolutely ridiculously useless there, so I sold it in a yard sale – to a woman who was going to use it for HER GAS LOG fireplace.

Why would you use a companion set with a gas fire?
I didn’t know what it was but it’s a cool picture! Glad you let us know the answer.

Yay – gold star to me for getting it right. Funny enough no-one in my family has one of those but as a kid visiting friends with real fires the poker set used to facinate me!
that was a good one. lol. Some f the trouble is that it looks like wood on the image.
