Macro Monday – Puzzle No. 6
Posted on January 25, 2010 in Life, the Universe and Everything, Oddities by Jay52 Comments »

MM-6cjs

Ooh, do I have a good one for you today!

I took this a little while ago, and found it this morning while sorting through my picture files.   I thought it was a fun and rather pretty picture …  But what is it?

This one was not taken inside the house. In fact, I was walking Sid when I saw it and thought it appealling enough to take a few pictures.  I only had my little point-and-shoot Panasonic Lumix with me, but it did a pretty good job, didn’t it?

Looking at it now, as a picture standing on its own, rather than a part of my visual world, I think it’s rather beautiful.  It’s something which is quite common in our towns and villages, and even in a few places outside them.  Not something you can plan for, it just happens.

Mysterious?  No, not at all.  It’s really rather ordinary.

As always, if you return here tomorrow, you’ll find the answer added to the bottom of the post, and also in the comments.  And as always, tiresome though it is, if you want to see the full sized version you’ll have to click on this picture, and then click again on the picture on the next screen.

Oops, I nearly forgot to add the link for Macro Monday!

Well, here we are on Tuesday and DBM is bugging me for the answer! Tee hee. OK, I’ll take pity on you all. Go here, and see for yourself what it is. I’ve kindly put a little square around the part of the picture you should be looking at. It is, after all, a macro, and the new picture is taken from several feet away. In case you still can’t see it, I’ve made a little close up of part of that section.

Oh, and congratulations to Squirrel Queen, the only person to guess correctly this week. Well done, you!  And commendations go to Heather P and Maria, both of whom were pretty darned close.

It’s a glass object, I think. Or scrumpled up cellophane… with streaks of green and orange paint running down the back of it? Or maybe the inside of a traffic light? I haven’t got a clue!

It is something that got icy clothes, I think. I also thought about traffic lights but instead of black it should have been green :)

Another masterpiece Jay. I don’t know how you find these gems. I too think it’s some sort of traffic light, but it looks like it’s are buried in ice, and that can’t be. If it’s something that ‘just happens’ then it must be something to do with nature and I’m back to ice again! Sorry, but you’ve got me cornered Jay and I’ll have to wait till tomorrow.

Everyone – I don’t normally come back and reply to comments before giving up the answer, but you are all way wrong! OH says I’m being cruel, so I’ll give you a little more information.

Now that so many of you have said it, I can so clearly SEE the traffic lights that are simply not there! But no, not traffic lights. In fact, not any kind of light, and not plastic, cellophane, ice or glass. And it’s not wet.

Granny and Babs both mentioned that they felt that it must be a natural process because I said ‘it just happens’. Not so, my friends. Not so. ;)

Thanks for all your guesses so far – keep trying!

Everyone – Thank you all so much for taking part! I loved some of your guesses – Croom’s ‘tyre mark over petrol’ was very creative, and I wish it had been a beautiful insect as Granny Grimble suggested. My, that would have been a stunner, wouldn’t it?

Reading through the comments, I’ve been looking at that photograph with new eyes, and can really see why some of you guessed as you did. A shower door with obscured glass, something frozen in ice, or going past a rainy window .. .they all make sense!

I hope you aren’t too disappointed to discover the truth; it is in fact a wall inside a small tunnel, where a footpaths runs below a road. Over time, it became completely covered in graffiti, whereupon someone painted most of it silver so that they could start again. It really was quite beautiful in its own way, but it’s gone now. I passed a team of supervised ‘youth offenders’ on a recent dog walk, with overalls and buckets and paintbrushes, painting it all out. The wall has become a uniform grey.

    For now. ;)

  41. on 26 Jan 2010 at 7:23 pm41petra michelle

Amazing, Jay! Would never have guessed it was graffiti! In addition to your macros’ aesthetics, they’re a challenge for the aging brain cells! ;)

Kala – Thanks! I didn’t used to like graffiti, but actually I do like some of it now. I think for me it depends on where it is. On a concrete underpass wall, or the side of an ugly building, it can be interesting and fun, and yes, beautiful (depending on the artist!). In the middle of a beauty spot or at a historically important site, no. I would never find that acceptable.

    – Carletta – Oh, how funny! Yes, you should have listened! LOL!

SquirrelQueen – Yes! You were the only one to get this absolutely right, too! Well done! :)

LisasChaos – It does look like a shower door, doesn’t it? I might have guessed that myself, if I hadn’t known!
