Macro Monday – puzzle No. 7
Posted on February 1, 2010 in Life, the Universe and Everything, Oddities by Jay35 Comments »

MM-PuzzleNo7a-cjs

I don’t know about you people, but I had great fun with last week’s Macro Monday puzzle, partly (no doubt) because I foxed you all! Mwahahahaha!

Well, all except Squirrel Queen, and two others who were very close, anyway. This week I have another quite difficult puzzle for you – at least, I think it is – but I promise I’ll be kinder next time. After all, it’s no fun at all if you don’t feel you have a fighting chance of guessing, and I don’t want you all running off and deserting me, besides which, half the fun of setting a puzzle in the first place is to provide some entertainment for my readers.

So bear with me. I struggled a little to think of something this week, because at the moment I’m struggling to think at all. I’m no longer stuck in the 30 second loop, but I’m a long way from being back to normal. When I saw this, I realised it would make a great picture, but until I was nearly done I didn’t realise that it might be really quite difficult for some, impossible for others.

Take a look. It’s something I found in my kitchen, although it would have been equally at home in the dining room, or even in certain places of recreation and relaxation outside the home entirely.

Let’s see … what clues can I give you that won’t give it away entirely? Well, I’m betting very few of you actually have one of these at home, but if you do, it will be pretty much this size and shape but maybe it will have a different pattern of holes. Those of you who don’t have one might never have seen one – and might not know such a thing even exists – so I’m going to give you two further picture clues showing different angles. If you’re one of these people, and you’re really stuck, you might want to go here.

And if you still have no idea, there’s one more – but this is the very last clue I’m going to give you. Okay?

Now, off you go and wrack your brains, and then come back and start guessing! As usual, I’ll be back here tomorrow to add a link to a picture of the whole thing, and I’ll let you know in the comments what the answer is. Good luck!

Well, here we are on Tuesday evening and no-one has guessed this one correctly – except for Teresa who has seen this item for herself here in my kitchen, and Kat, who hasn’t seen mine, but who definitely knows what it is because she’s seen one on film at the very least – and in the hands of a naked Johnny Depp* too! Thank you, ladies for keeping quiet and not spoiling the game!

So, I guess the rest of you would like to know what it is, huh? OK, then. Go here, and all will be revealed, including the set-up I used to photograph it.

Well, perhaps not quite all, because some of you still won’t know what it is. If you are still curious and/or frustrated, try this link.

Thank you all so much for playing! I promise next week’s image will be a more recognisable item!

* Johnny Depp played Inspector Fred Abberline in the movie ‘From Hell’. At one point, Fred is seen drinking absinthe in the bathtub. Of course, he’s also laced his absinthe with laudanum AND been smoking opium, neither of which are a recommended part of the absinthe ritual, so it’s not surprising that he passed out cold. Do not try this at home!

Oooh, I’m first. I didn’t expect that. I have a guess but what if I spoil it for others? Ah well.

I think it’s part of a garlic press, the part that swings out so you can clean it.

I’m probably WAY off base. But I can’t seem to see it as anything else.

It sure looks like a mounting plate for another piece that slips over it. I thought bottle opener, but no matter, the way you captured the gleam of the metal is excellent. It’s a nice photo that stands on it’s own.

It looks lie the little flip out bit on a cannister of salt to me, but I haven’t checked the clues yet. Going to do that now.

Well I thought I knew instantly what it was, but then I checked the other photos. The thing I thought it was has two metal parts with holes. I guess I don’t know then.

It might be an opened garlic press…or a fancy cover for a sconce type lighting fixture??? Whatever, the metallic glow is quite nice!

At first I thought that it was some form of drip tray (could be used outside for potted plants too) but having 2 patterns of hole styles threw me on that guess! Frankly, I don’t know! But love the glow of light on it! And do I see coffee stains on it?

    For baking I guess:).

great light in the shot anyway :-)

Very cool shot..love the sheen of it. Hmm..could it be something having to do with a stove!? or maybe the tail end of a cheese cutter. We’ll see! You are a photo-riddler!

    I think I know it.

It’s a banana. You know – the ones they use for skirts. :3

Everyone – You’re all wrong so far! Not a garlic press, a spatula, or a bottle opener. Not a cake slicer, or a skirt banana, or anything to do with stoves. Not any of the other implements you’ve suggested, not even a drip tray for plants – although there is a teeny tiny eensy-weensy little tadlet of ‘right’ in that guess. Except it’s not a drip tray for plants. LOL!

Oh, yeah, and it’s not a part of something else, either. It’s complete in itself, although it is used with something else.

Gemma – No, those aren’t coffee stains.

Teresa – You know very well what it is, since you have seen it for yourself!

Maureen – Absolutely right! Well done, it is indeed a metal thingy with holes in. Now. What IS it? LOL!

  23. on 01 Feb 2010 at 8:20 pm23Baino

Looks like some sort of fastener but I can’t imagine why you’d need one in the kitchen. Nup. Stumped as usual.

First off, Jay, I’m so glad you’re feeling better! :) )

At quick glance I thought it was a cheese grater, but upon closer look and at your clues, I have absolutely no idea! As usual!

Thank you for offering the extra clues! Even with them, I’m clueless! Perhaps that’s where I’m meant to be? Very zen, eh? ;)

Everyone – Thank you all so much for playing once more.

I hope you won’t feel too cheated when you find out what this little ‘strainer’ is, but it made a fun macro, didn’t it? And a fun puzzle to work on too. I’ve included a link to a short explanation of what it is and what it does, for those who don’t recognise the object itself.

Next week, I have a much more homely puzzle for you!

  33. on 02 Feb 2010 at 11:52 pm33granny grimble

Oh dear! I didn’t even get the tiniest bit near guessing that one. I’m sorry. but the only thing I know about absinthe is… wait for it…absinthe makes the heart grow fonder!

Well my first guess was a tea bag squeezer, so I wasn’t so far off. I still have no idea how, or for what that strainer is used. I don’t even know what absinthe is :)
babs – beetle´s last blog ..Oh Babs! where are you? My ComLuv Profile

  35. on 06 Feb 2010 at 6:36 pm35Jay

Granny – Haha! Yes, indeed. Absinthe is a drink (needless to say) which has been banned in the past because it was thought to be so toxic it was liable to send people mad. The truth is that it isn’t that toxic at all, but has a very high alcohol content. Looks like a vermouth type drink, but is stronger than many spirits. Hence another reason to dilute it! It’s very strongly flavoured with herbs, including anise. Smells gorgeous!

Babs – Not to far out really! Just that you can’t get drunk on tea. LOL!

See above comment for a description of absinthe.
