ABC Wednesday once more, and there are so many ‘C’s to include – in fact, it’s been a little difficult to decide which ones to leave out!  But first a little puzzle for you.  Where is the ‘C‘ in that picture up there?
Those that have greyhounds will know the answer of course, because the Princess Renie is demonstrating a classic pose known as the ‘cockroach’! Otherwise known as ‘roaching’, it’s a pose beloved of greyhounds* all over the world.
Yes, greyhounds certainly do love their comfort. And to this end, without any encouragement at all, they will adopt the use of cushions.
Notice that not only has the Princess laid her elegant head on a convenient cushion, but she has one gently supporting her hind leg, too – and another behind her head, should she decide to roll over and roach.
She isn’t the only one to love cushions. Jack had a knack for making himself comfortable with them, too.
Aaah, such contentment! A comfy cushion to cuddle. What more could a dog want? Well, actually, my little Pirate Jack had another great love in his life. He was a playful little fellow, and adored his yellow toys. In particular …
Mr Yellow Chicken! He’d chase that thing around the house, and even wander up the garden with it clutched in his jaws! Sometimes, he’d even use Mr Chicken as a cushion!
You see, though it used to be thought that dogs could only see in black and white, and shades of grey, this isn’t quite true. We now know that they do have limited colour vision. It is poor, compared to ours, though, and the colours they see best are blue at one end of the spectrum, and yellow at the other. So you see, if you put a red toy on a green carpet, it would be hard for a dog to spot that colour. But if you put a nice bright yellow toy on a green carpet, well then, it would become quite clear. Jack had poor sight anyway, being elderly. He had cataracts, as well as an inflammatory eye condition called episcleritis, so the yellow toys were very helpful to him.
Jack loved all toys though, when he could find them. Sometimes, he’d cart them all off to his bed.
Quite a collection, huh? You’ll notice that apart from that red one, they’re all fairly high-visibility toys. You’ll also notice that one of his favourites – this time the yellow duck – is tucked up under his chin. Aw, bless!
Renie did play from time to time, but mostly she was the Princess, and confined herself to a few minutes activity here and there before climbing back into her chair.
She loved to be cosily covered with a blanket, when it was cold. And see that? Looks like that one was taken at Christmas!
Sometimes, the Princess liked to be completely covered!
And yes, she often slept with her mouth open. Charming, isn’t it?
So, where was I? Oh, yes. The Princess and the Pirate were very good companions. Here they are in the car -
Quite possibly on their way back from Central Park.
And here they are in the kitchen, companionably watching me cook.
In those days they were quite comfortable walking on the tile, but they both became concerned about it as they got older.
So, what to leave you with today? Hmm … well, it seems that Sid hasn’t had a look-in, so how about a picture of Sid …
… looking cute!
* And not only greyhounds, of course. I know that other dogs do it, too, and so did our cats!

Oh, do love all the doggie pics! Reminds me of our two and all the wild positions they can get in! Terrific post and photos for the C day! Thanks for sharing!

Looks comfy to me!
I simply adore greyhounds. They are the sweetest, smartest, cutest dogs around. I have seen them do things that no other dogs would do…like pull their beds along the hardwood floor with their teeth until they are in the middle of a sun spot. So darned Clever!

I had a cat once who did a cockroach while sleeping: all four legs sticking up in the air!
Do you know, you are slowly turning me around to dog-ownership, although with four other voices in the house (saying miaow, which means NO!), it will take quite a bit more convincing!

Thank you for showing all those great pictures of your adorable greyhounds! It’s always so great to read your posts about them! I miss Johnny Depp though??;))
Thanks also for the visit. Yes Australia is awfully far from the Netherlands. The trip takes at least 1 1/2 days, sometimes even longer. Yes and I miss my daughter and her family. Fortunately they are coming in May or June. Why didn’t she choose, a European country. (Preferably the country of my dreams, which is Norway)?:(

Since my cat therapy isn’t quite working out, I really think that it might be time for me to get a dog. I know that they are good for the soul and will always provide comfort when needed.

Ooh, gorgeous pictures all of your much-loved companions past and present. They bring a smile and a tear all at the same time.
I do like figurines that feature animals

By the way, the Catherine Parr figure has got a greyhound laying its head lovingly on her lap – don’t know if it’s historically accurate though

Sylvia Kirkwood – Our dogs are a wonderful source of warmth and happiness, aren’t they?
Rajesh and Jill – Thanks!
Roger Green – Your daughter has the mini chicken? It’s funny, because after Jack (the Pirate) died, I went and bought myself one because it reminded me so much of him. It lives in my top drawer and I always think of Jack when I see it!
Photowannabe and Tumblewords – Thank you!
Christine – Ah, another true greyhound lover! But you’re right, of course. And I’ve seen that trick with the bed, too. I had one who went one better – he’d wait till someone was looking at him, then he’d go and stand in the sunspot, and look at the person then at his bed, then back at the person. No point in doing the dragging if you can get a ‘monkey’ to do it for you!
Pat – Ssshhh! Don’t speak too loud. They think they ARE children! LOL!
Lily – I bet the Yorkie looks just as silly with all four legs in the air, too!
Hildred, Jama, Baino, Anthony North and SJ Anne – Thank you!
Denise – Thank you – yes, I think I’m improving. It’s taking longer to get the short term memory working properly than I thought, though. There are still moments when I can’t remember what someone just said, or what I just did, and my concentration still isn’t good.
Great news about your MIL! I hope she gets along well with her new companion. Any problems, you know who to call!
Mara – Haha! Well, as everyone says, greyhounds are the most cat-like of all dog breeds. But I’m sure you are interpreting those ‘miaows’ correctly!
Angel Cel – Thanks! Yes, I know the feeling too! LOL!
Kate – Thank you!
Reader Wil – Thanks! We did do the trip to NZ back in the 80’s, and I well remember that flight, which was my first! Talk about jumping in at the deep end…
Johnny will be back. No worries.
Geralk – They loved to watch me cook! Of course, I do drop things quite often, so it was probably cupboard love. LOL!
DBM – Aw.. really? Well, I’m biased, of course, but yes, I think they are good for the soul. But I’m surprised your cat therapy isn’t working. I used to love having a cat on my lap to stroke. They’re very soothing, too! Maybe it’s true though, that we don’t have such a strong evolutionary link with cats.
Jabblog – I thought it was a greyhound! How sweet! They were definitely the preserve of royalty at that time, so it could well be historically accurate.

OMG – I was so surprised when I came here and saw Greyhounds! Oh how I love them. And NO ONE knows the art of comfort like a greyhound. We had three when we got Ricky (another shaggy terrier) and now we’re just down to one, Jeff, along with Ricky and CiCi….am definitely thinking of getting another though, so Jeff can teach it to be a Greyhound, rather than Ricky and CiCi teaching it to become a terrier. Well, I could talk forever about the Greyts, so I’ll leave now. Thanks for the visit.

These photos are so great. I love dogs but can’t have any as I more or less often travel (I would like it to be more than less
)) You used the past tense to talk about them. I hope they are still with you.
Joy and Secret Agent Woman – Thank you!
Life With Kaishon – Thanks! Renie would have lapped up your kisses and begged for more, Jack would have run away with the greyhound equivalent of rubbing at his face and yelling ‘get off me!’ LOL! Sid loves kisses though. He positively grins!
Susan – Thanks for your good wishes! And also for your kind words – I love that photo, too!
The ‘C’ in the first picture was ‘cockroach’ but it could easily have been ‘cushion’, too!
Nydia – Thank you! Yes, I think I’m still improving! Still have to see the neurologist, but hopefully it was just a ‘blip’.
Grace & Bradley – Thanks! Yes, greyhounds have a knack of being comfortable wherever they can find a soft spot!
Katherine – Haha! Happy to have made you laugh! ‘Added saliva’? Yeah, I’ve done that too. LOL! Mostly, greyhounds don’t dribble when they sleep, but little Jack did, bless him. He was practically toothless, so his tongue would hang out of his mouth and there’d often be a little wet patch.
Magiceye – Thank you!
Just B – I believe I saw a picture of a greyhound on your blog a while back, so I knew you loved them. It’s one of the reasons I added you to my feed! Us crazy greyhound people have to stick together!
Liz – Thanks!
Sandy – Hahaha! You and me both, my dear!
JD – They’re very lovable dogs – and I’m very happy that you discovered that through reading my blog! Yay! Another convert to the ‘Greyhounds are Adorable’ club!
Troy – Thanks, Troy!
Marie – I understand. We’re lucky right now, because any time we want to go away, Sid goes back to his trainer to live in her house. It’s where he lived before we adopted him, so he’s perfectly happy, and so are they because they love him too.
Sadly, Renie and Jack left us within weeks of each other at the turn of 2008/9, but Sid is our new dog, so hopefully he’ll be with us for some time yet!
How lovely was that!!!! They were/are beautiful!!!!

LisaF – Thank you! No matter what the breed, I love to see dogs roaching. It’s the sign of a happy and relaxed dog.
Kate – Really? Well, I know there are groups between here and where you are .. also the LGT (Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust) will rehome to your area, I’m pretty sure. And there’s White Lodge Longdogs just outside Melton Mowbray. We used to kennel our dogs there.
What beautiful dogs!
White Lodge Longdogs/Leicestershire Retired Greyhound Trust is just outside Melton Mowbray and you should be able to find our message board by googling around (not sure whether it’s ok to post links here!)
Craig – Thanks! Any comment with a link is put into moderation for me to check, but I don’t mind at all putting in links to greyhound organisations! If you’d like to comment on the most recent greyhound post, more people will see it – or you could wait until the next ABC Wednesday for another greyhound post!
Actually, we used to board Jack and Renie at White Lodge when Clare owned it!
