Macro Monday – Puzzle No. 12
Posted on March 8, 2010 in Life, the Universe and Everything, Oddities by Jay50 Comments »

MM-Pz-12

Well, I tried. I tried to make this week’s Macro Monday puzzle a little easier for you, and I thought I’d done quite well, but when I showed it to OH he was … puzzled! And then when I told him what it was, he told me I was cruel! Oh dear.

But since it’s all I have for you this week, I suppose you’ll have to just do your best, won’t you? Tee hee!

Now this object is found in pretty much every household in some form or other. The shape varies a little, the size can vary a lot and the colour varies too, but this is a nice, average example. Common as muck here in the UK, in Europe, and in the USA, I feel confident in saying that this is something you’ll find in pretty much every corner of the civilised world – in the sense that ‘civilised’ means ‘a society having a high degree of development, both social and technological’, though for all I know, you might find these things in a grass hut in the back of beyond, too.

Pretty, isn’t it? But these are not usually purely decorative (though they can be), because they do have an important function, too.

What is it?

You can check back here tomorrow evening (UK time) to find the correct answer in a picture link, and also later in the comments when I answer you all, but I don’t answer very quickly on this one. I like to give everyone a chance to guess without giving it away.

Over to you – prove OH wrong, and give me some correct guesses. I know you can!

Alrighty then – here we are on Tuesday evening and I suppose you all want the answer? Here it is! Surprised? Some of you won’t be – congratulations to Mr Moon, to Colleen, Icy BC, Dutchbaby, Babs Beetle, Christina, Jientje, Rebecca, Jama, Shelle and Sistertex! Seems I did alright after all, in my attempts to make this week’s puzzle a little easier!

Great macro, nice colors and light.
I think it is a glass ash tray.

  2. on 08 Mar 2010 at 11:07 am2Vicki

I’m going for an ash tray as well but I’m going to take two bites of the cherry and guess it might be the spout of a glass jug.

The glass makes a great photo, I love the way the color swirls through it. I will also say an ashtray. But then maybe that notch is to hold a spoon?

I think it’s a glass jug/vase viewed down the open neck. It has a handle on the side. I don’t think it’s an ash tray as there wouldn’t be one in pretty much every household these days. Right or wrong, it’s a great shot Jay and I love the pretty colours running through it. I also love this ‘game’ and can’t wait till Mondays for the next one.

Well, my first instinct was ashtray, so that is what I am going with. Let’s be honest, this is the first time that I have even had any thoughts about what something is, so I am one step ahead of myself (except the time I got it right by cheating, but that doesn’t count, since I cheated).

I had no clue at all until I started reading the responses. I’m going to agree with moon and go with the bottom of a beer bottle. I know I’ve grazed my fingers over those glass dimples in the past, I just can’t zoom out far enough to remember exactly what I was holding.

It looks like an ashtray. But you find it in almost every household? I’ll be back to find the right answer. However, it’s a beautiful shot.

  42. on 10 Mar 2010 at 1:28 am42Jay

Everyone – I did enjoy this week! It’s nice to see so many of you guessing correctly – and though I thought it was very obvious what it was, I can also see why so many of you thought it was an ashtray. I’ve seen glass ashtrays very much like the bottom of this bottle!

And the winners are: Moon, Colleen, Icy BC, Dutchbaby, Babs Beetle, Christina, Jientje, Rebecca, Jama, Shelle and Sistertex! All of you correctly guessed ‘bottle’. Well done!

Thank you all for playing and many thanks to those who complimented my photo. I liked the colours, but it’s nice to hear you say so too!

It’s an Absinthe bottle, by the way. Not green glass (though I won’t be penalising you for that), but green liquid in clear glass.

So, to answer a few of you who said something other than your guess, or something else which caught my interest -

Geri – Now that’s a very creative guess, and I think they certainly should make soap dishes like that!

Colleen – Surprisingly, there is no-one’s face in the background, but now that you mention it, it does look as if there is! It’s a wooden piece of furniture, with drawer knobs on it!

Janet and Gattina – Hahaha! Two more excellently eccentric guesses!

Dutchbaby – I feel for you. No doubt you’ll be kicking yourself right now! LOL!

Sistertex – Best not to ask how I’m doing, honey. Just let me say I’m still upright and breathing! ROFL!

Thanks for asking! You too, Petra!
