Macro Monday – Puzzle No. 14
Posted on March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized by Jay41 Comments »

MM-PuzzleFourteen

I keep trying, people. I really do. I keep trying to make these Macro Monday puzzles easier without giving the game away completely … I’ve posted pictures before which look so easy to me and you’ve all struggled, so I’m not going to say this one is easy. Just have a go, huh?

Now, this is something you won’t find in a house, although there are some buildings where you can find them, and I actually found one in the bathroom of a guest house once. That, however, was highly unusual, and I’ll probably never see that in my lifetime again, unless I go back to the same place!

Outside the house they’re very common indeed, and although there are some places in the world where they are not to be found, there really can’t be anyone who has access to a computer and hasn’t at least seen one of these things.

Most of you will have used the object this is a part of. Most of you will own one – possibly more than one. However, sometimes the object doesn’t have this particular feature … and this applies more in the US, I believe, than in other countries. If you are in the US, and you feel the need for an extra clue, go here for a second picture of a different part of the object which, if you ask me, should completely give it away. But remember, the puzzle is the picture on this page, and that’s what I want the answer to.

So, off you go. I’m expecting lots of correct answers this week! The answer will be posted here tomorrow evening (UK time) in a link at the bottom of this post, along with the winners, and there will be further information in the comments.

Have fun!

And here we are on Tuesday evening, and I see I made this one far, far too easy! I think it is pointless picking out a winner since only two or three of you failed to guess right, but I have to say, well done, pretty much all of you!

The correct answer is here, in picture form as usual. So, thanks for playing! Next week … well, I’ll make it harder again, see if I don’t!

MWAHAHAHAHA!

Ho ho, I’m first and I think I know the answer to this – is it a gearstick in a car? One of the hints that gives it away is the amount of dirt and crud that gathers – why do they attract all the crumbs?

AHHH Lola stole my thunder. I’m sure it’s the base of a shift stick. Pretty blue! I’m an automatic girl myself.

I stared and stared and there was something niggling in the back of my brain telling me that I knew this one, but I just couldn’t figure it out. However, when I saw some of the guesses, I was pretty sure they were right, so I’m going with the rest of the crowd and guessing gear shift. It’s been a loooong time since I’ve driven a stick shift.

Now, I’m curious… why on earth was there one in a bathroom?

The base of the gear stick. You are right about cars in the US and Canada – most people drive an automatic. When I bought my car, the dealers kept asking me why I wanted a manual. Some of them actually asked my husband the question, even though I think it was pretty obvious that the car was going to be mine. Mr. DBM shrugged and said the decision had nothing to do with them and perhaps they should try asking me! Needless to say, I didn’t buy my car from them.

Is it worth it to add my two cents worth? It’s the leater thingy that covers the bottom part of the gearstick in either a car or a coach (although those aren’t owned nearly as much as cars are).

At first I also thought it is a gear shift in a car but with this complicated “it is but still it is not” explanation of yours, who could know what it is?

Sandy – It has nothing directly to do with a computer, I just meant that if you’re online looking at this, then the chances are you will also have seen one of these.

    Sorry for the confusion!

I came back to see the answer and since my Hubs walked by he said gearshift boot and the other shot stitching on a steering wheel. :)

  36. on 23 Mar 2010 at 10:03 pm36Jay

Everyone – Well done you lot! I see I made this one too easy, but I still have to say congratulations to everyone except those few who didn’t guess that it was the leather cover of a gearstick! And you were probably thinking it couldn’t be that easy, weren’t you? ;)

This is the gearstick in the little BMW Z3 that I refuse to let OH sell. It’s such a comfortable, fun little car, though horribly impractical and a real extravagance. No chance of getting a greyhound in there!

As you see, while it does have a gearstick which looks very traditional with its leather cover (or boot, as some of you call it), it is, in fact, an automatic. Quite rightly, most of you guessed that the other picture is a close-up of the steering wheel. This car is getting old now, but I love it – it’s such a pleasure to drive.

I do love Gattina’s guess, though I’m glad it’s not!

DBM – Oh, how I hate it when they do that! I had the same thing when I was organising us to move from NZ to England – the wretched men kept asking OH what was going where and how, despite the fact that I’d done ALL the booking and arranging and paying for it – with the result that some of the stuff we needed immediately went by sea! GRR!

Dutchbaby – There is a rather lovely and unique guesthouse in St George, Utah, called The Seven Wives Inn. The rooms and suites are themed, and the one we stayed in was 1920′s style – it’s called ‘Sarah’. Not content with that, they’d installed all kinds of motor memorabilia, including a 20′s petrol pump in the bedroom and a Model T Ford in the bathroom, converted into a hot tub! Now, there’s something you don’t see every day!
Thanks for playing – see you next week? :)
