You know you’re depressed when …
Posted on August 13, 2008 in Food and Drink, Johnny Depp, Life, the Universe and Everything by Jay33 Comments »

IceCreamI just ate lunch. Pretty ordinary thing to do, huh? Except that it went like this:

Me, talking to me: I’m hungry – what can I have?

Me: How about potato cakes?

Me: Good idea!

Me: Oh no … they’ve got green spots on, despite being dated tomorrow!!

Me (absent-mindedly nibbling on a handful of the Food Doctor’s original seed mix): Can’t eat those, then.

Me: Nope, have to think of something else.

Me: (opening drawer to reveal secret cache of Cadbury’s chocolate buttons and stuffing some into mouth): How about cheese on toast?

Me: I’m not supposed to be eating bread, remember?

Me: (feeding a few short lengths of liquorice – found in drawer alongside chocolate buttons – into mouth): So what?

Me: Oh well, this will have to do.

*Stuffs food under grill*

A short while later …

Me: Do these sardines taste funny to you?

See, I’ve always had this problem. When I’m depressed, I eat. If the right food isn’t immediately available, I eat the wrong food and I eat plenty of it.

So you want to know the end of that sentence up there in the title? Alrighty then. Take a deep breath, it’s a long one:

‘You know you’re depressed when you refuse the chance to watch a Johnny Depp movie on the grounds that you can’t eat and watch him at the same time, and you have a date with a large bowl of triple chocolate ice cream mixed with coffee ice cream, with chocolate buttons sprinkled on top, three Cornish wafers on the side, and a hot chocolate chaser.’

I’m the opposite, when I’m depressed or stressed I stop eating completely! Eating too much is better than eating not enough :o )

Haha you sound just like me – if the *right food* isn’t available, I end up eating total crap.

Eating as a defense against depression is one of my faults too. I sleep to fight stress. I eat to fight depression. And I literally starve when I’m over joyed about something.

    Happy trails.

Oh, I so love long sentences!

I don’t even have to be depressed to eat junk foods!
Me (opening fridge) What shall I have to eat?
Moves to food cupboard – What’s in here?
Hmmmm…. Oh lets have some ham and crisps, it’s less fuss.
Or shall I have one of these ‘Just pour hot water on’ snacks?
    That’ll do.

Tell you what, I am sending Mrs M over there right now, you can suffer this bloody detox lark, and I can eat your lovely choccie buttons … mmmm, choccie …..

Gemma – I guess it depends on how long it lasts. A little starvation would do me good, but weeks’ worth, no probably not.

Angi – Sometimes I eat total crap even when the right food is available!

Swubird – It’s a curse, isn’t it? We need to be kept super happy at all times, then we’ll stay slim! Sounds a good plan, no?

Babs – We have some supermarket junk meals for tonight. Can’t be bothered to cook, but I need to eat, and it needs to be instant gratification, so it’ll be cauliflower cheese for me. Maybe with some more of that wonderful triple choc ice cream for afters.

Moon – Come on over! Plenty of chocolate here! Not sure I want to trade though… ;)

  7. on 13 Aug 2008 at 5:29 pm7Jenn

If I lived in a world where there was wonderful Cadbury like you do (and not ikky US Cadbury) I would be savoring it during the depressed and non-depressed moments alike.

    Hm…

    Does this make you Depp-ressed?

PS– Have some Wonka bars and see “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” That’s a two birds with one stone sort of thing…

It doesn’t take much for me to want to munch. Lately I find myself grazing because I’m tired. Chocolate has caffeine in it, I reason, so it should wake me up!

And then I feel sluggish. My brain has no idea what’s good for me!

    Peace – D

During the summer, my brother and I eat what’s easy. Mainly cereal, cady, popcicles, granola bars, fruit snacks, ect. If I have to tounch more than three things to make it, chances are i’m not going to eat it because I’m simply to lazy. Now I’m going to get a popcicle if you don’t mind.

I thought about you yesterday when I saw a JD movie on something about somebody’s wife in the title, the captains wife. Is that a JD movie. I’ll be depressed for chocolate.

  12. on 13 Aug 2008 at 11:13 pm12Ruth Hull Chatlien

I’m sorry you’re feeling depressed. It is tempting to eat that “feel good” stuff when we’re down, isn’t it?

Did you watch the JD movie later? Or was it on TV?

  13. on 14 Aug 2008 at 12:00 am13DrowseyMonkey

I love to eat, happy, sad, depressed, joyful … doesn’t matter. lol

Hope you’re feeling more up beat soon :)

Jenn – Yes, I have noticed that the stuff on sale in the US is not real Cadbury’s! You’re joking, but I actually spelled it Deppressed in the post and had to go back and change it! But Willy would be too jolly for me right now. My movie of choice was From Hell. ;)

River Poet – It’s interesting that you say that, I know my body signals get confused by tiredness, too, and I’ll eat instead of sleeping or drinking.

Sarah – That is not a good diet!! It’s seriously lacking in chocolate, for one thing!

Ann – I’m just too lazy to cook, never too lazy to eat!

Valerie – Ah, The Astronaut’s Wife? Yes, that’s a Depp movie. I always wonder why she resisted! LOL!

Ruth – Thanks. I’ll be OK, I think. Yes, I did. I watched my favourite. Not on TV though, from the Johnny Depp DVD drawer. ;)

  15. on 14 Aug 2008 at 12:04 am15Jay

DM – Well, that’s always been my problem too, but I had it under control until very recently! *Sigh*

    Thanks for the good wishes.

Okay, you got me. I’m depressed. For supper I had cold spagetti and ice cream. Then I had some cheetos, you know the new white cheddar ones? You don’t? Well take my word for it, they’re wonderful…and some kind soul sent me some cadbury’s chocolate a year ago. I hid it in the kitchen bureau. I found it like an hour ago. It is no longer in this world. It’s in mine. I feel better reading that I am not the only loony…I mean depressed person in the Universe.
Hugs to you, pass the chocolate

Sandi, you have more reason to be depressed than me so I give you full permission to stuff yourself silly with chocolate. On a temporary basis only, of course – as soon as you can cope you can stop. ;)

I haven’t had white cheddar Cheetos, but I have had white cheddar Pirate Booty and it’s my favourite US snack!

    Hugs to you.

    Hi,

I love chocolate (& coffee) too — any time, for any reason! I even pack chocolate when I travel for when I get cravings in the hotel room.

One of my favorite chocolate treats are Coffee Crisp candy bars. They used to be very hard to find in CA, and our relatives from Canada would always bring them to us. Now we find them here from time to time and stock up when we do!

    Found you through BWAB btw.

    Happy Chocolate!

Hi Linda – nice to see you! ‘Happy chocolate’ .. yes indeed. Chocolate is very very happy stuff!

Here in the UK I pack sachets of hot chocolate for hotel rooms, but we’ve seldom found a kettle in the US rooms, only a coffee maker. Now, we travel with a mini immersion heater to make hot drinks abroad! Gotta have tea, and preferably hot chocolate too!

  20. on 14 Aug 2008 at 1:03 am20JT

Chocolate fixes everything, chocolate is one of my top gods, you can never have to much chocolate!
While I was out yesterday to go to the Dr’s, one of my co-workers brought in this chocolate heaven deluxluxa! They saved me a piece (I’m so loved!) and I about had a heart attack when I saw it! 5 layers of cake with layers of ganache in between and on top. Any depression I could even have pretended to were gone immediately. You should really go get some!

I heard in the past that the Cadbury in the UK is very different from ours here, but it wasn’t until a Brit co-worker back in Brooklyn about 12 years ago brought some back from home, did I understand why.

IIRC, the real Cadbury, is far less sweeter, and you can taste more of the chocolate. Is my memory right on this Jay?

  24. on 14 Aug 2008 at 9:29 am24Jay

JT – Ah, you are loved!! That sounds so nice!!

Bee – There is nearly always chocolate in the house for a quick fix, though these days I usually keep Green and Black’s 70% cocoa chocolate. Often Maya Gold which is quite delicious and so rich that you really only need one square for a fix. Much, much easier not to eat the whole bar, anyway! LOL!

Mr N – Yes indeed! Much more chocolatey, less sweet, and more melting too!

Dawn – Potato cakes are made of cooked potato and flour have the texture of thick pancakes but have no egg in them. They’re officially breakfast food, I think, but I use them as a toast substitute and melt cheese on them, or grill sardines on them (sardines being one of the very few fish I can eat). You can fry them, or grill them (toast them). They’re meant to be eaten hot.

I love comfort food. My all time favorite “I am depressed food” is a Tuna Melt with extra cheddar cheese and sliced tomatoes. Followed by a gallon of coffee ice cream and a vat of grey goose!

Ahhhh … I Depply feel your pain. When I watch Johnny, I drool so much that eating is well nigh impossible. If I ever meet the man he’ll walk away wondering whether I need some kind of surgery to control my salivary glands … oh well … by the way girl, if I had them kinds of treats in the house I’d be as big AS the house. Mercy. Cadbury’s chocolate buttons? No way could I leave those lay around. They’d be gone in a skinny minute …

  27. on 14 Aug 2008 at 6:40 pm27Jay

Meleah – Extra cheese is always good when you need cheering. And ice cream! I can’t do the Grey Goose anymore, but I do remember shovelling ice cream and drinking brandy at one time. A good combination!

My favourite comfort food meal choice now is probably macaroni cheese or lasagne – or maybe a home made steak pie with chips. Lots of carbs, anyway!

Jenny – They are gone! And it doesn’t surprise me that you are the same on the drooling but not eating thing. Peas in a pod, luv. ;)

And I have a friend who shouldn’t eat dairy, but now and again, she does. LOL!

    – People fall into one of two categories, I think: there are those who eat when they’re unhappy, and there are those who stop eating when they’re unhappy. I think the biggest group is the one like us.

This post reminded me of an old joke.

What did one cannibal say to the other after eating a clown?
Did that taste funny to you?

You see? Just like those sardines.
