The Princess and the pea
Posted on September 5, 2008 in Hounds, The Home Front by Jay30 Comments »

PrincessPeaAI know, I know. You all think this is a Photoshopped picture, don’t you? You think I caught The Princess in a somewhat odd pose and decided to have some fun.

You think I have nothing better to do than sit all afternoon digitally placing a small green pea in the mouth of a dog.

Honestly – just what kind of person do you think I am? If I’m going to spend that amount of time and effort I’m more likely to be cleaning up the background of a picture of Johnny Depp so I can see him better! D’uh!

No, this picture is absolutely genuine.

You see, I often buy a pack of peas in the pod at this time of year. I never actually cook them, I just eat them as they are, because they are quite delicious raw and cooking merely ruins them. Anyway, there I was this afternoon, idly shelling peas and stuffing them into my mouth .. Mmmm! Nice peas!

And then I noticed a pair of wistful brown eyes fixed upon me. The Princess clearly thought that if anyone was eating, it really should be her.

I showed her an empty pod and said ‘See? Nothing interesting!’

She took it delicately between her little front teeth, trotted off with it and spent the next few seconds industriously shredding it on her bed. Other Half said it was cruel to give her an empty pod. He said she looked disappointed.

I shook my head at his little flight of fancy, but indulged him and offered The Princess a full pod.

Here’s what happened. Enjoy!

YUMM pea pods! I think i’m going to get a ride to the gocerey store and get some now.

I knew the Princess was a princess but this really shows how much of one she is. I mean come on! Her bed looks more comfortable than mine!

Oh bless her! She was looking for more and you didn’t give any. Have you eaten raw runner beans? Delicious!

I don’t know who’s funnier, more lovable, or more original, Jay … you or your dogs.

This made me chuckle. My dog will eat everything but lettuce and onions. And even those she will eat if she thinks you accidently dropped them and she’s not meant to have them! The kids played tricks on her by dropping something (like a piece of uncooked garlic) and saying “Bother!” and trying to quickly pick it up as if it was really delicious. Shelly swoops in like something that swoops really fast, and it’s down the hatch before she even tastes it. She is so smug with herself!

I loved it. At the end, the Princess was like, “Where did all the sweet little round things go?”

We give Smokey baby carrots for treats. Crunchy and sweet. He loves them.

Sarah – Yep – we don’t call her The Princess for nothing! Let’s hope she doesn’t get one of those peas under the bed, huh? LOL!

Babs – Don’t worry – she did get some more after I turned the camera off! I wanted to keep the vid to a decent length – it took about tweny-five minutes to upload as it was!

OH eats raw runner beans, but won’t touch raw peas. I eat raw peas, but can’t stand raw beans. We’re like Jack Sprat and his wife!

Meleah – I know! There’s very little ‘people food’ that she’ll eat, so I was really surprised that she’d eat them, but they are sweet!

Jenny – When I see Johnny better, I’m keeping him. Get used to it! ROFL!

Katherine – Your dog is wise! Onions are toxic to dogs in quantity! I have a list of things they shouldn’t eat, including macadamia nuts. I mean, who in their right mind would feed macadamia nuts to a dog? They’re the most expensive thing on the market, aren’t they? LOL!

Picture of Johnny for Hump Day? Mmm! Can’t wait to see which one it is!! Maybe it’s one I’ve never seen before!! What a treat!

Ruth – I loved the way she searched for errant peas!! She won’t eat carrots, she just chews on them and spits tiny orange fragments everwhere. Tiny wet orange fragments! ;)

Baino – Which is exactly why I filmed it! No-one would believe me that she delicately shelled it completely before eating the peas, would they?

Dawn – Too much competition in your house! No time to waste shelling the things! LOL!

*laughing* You and Princess raise the pea to new literary heights! Loved the video. So content, she was. Are you both vegetarians? Or she just happens to enjoy certain vegetabls? Love it! p.s. Btw, watched Billy Connelly live in New York on dvd last night. Couldn’t stop laughing! He’s so endearing, and laughs at himself all of the time. And his interactions with the audience! Great material, great comedian. Am so glad I happened upon your post!

That dog is ADORABLE!!! And how clever – Bert would have scoffed the whole bloody thing (and then yacked it up all over the carpet) and the way she takes it out of your hand so delicately….awwwwwwwwww

PS: LOVED the ‘barom pom pom’ background music provided by Mr Swordfish too! x

River Poet and Lynn – Thanks! We think she’s beautiful, of course, but I guess we would!

Moon – Thanks! It was a very lucky shot! And that’s when I decided I should turn the dial to ‘movie’.

Valerie – That hand is the only bit in the movie with a person in it! How funny you should get to see that part. Mostly it’s The Princess shelling her own peas, but one escaped and I picked it up for her.

Employee – I have a few more for her!

Petra – Really? I’m SO glad you liked him! I love the way he heckles the audience, especially those who come in late, or get up for a pee halfway through. He has no compunction in letting them know what he thinks!

No, we’re not vegetarians, and even if we were, I wouldn’t inflict it on the dogs, carnivores by nature. I just chew on raw veg in a vain attempt not to eat chocolate by the yard. ;)

EM – Aw .. thank you! She did used to snatch when we first got her, but the ‘close your fist’ technique worked very well for her. She soon learned that if she wasn’t gentle, she didn’t get. ;)

PS: Yes, Mr YS is very useful like that. LOL!

Oh bless her – she is gorgeous!!!!! Hippie is a runner bean freak much the same as me – she is always waiting when I’m slicing them for freezing and runs off with one to pod on her bed!!! Give her a big squdge from me!!!!! x

Kate – Thank you! I’ve never tried her on runner beans! Maybe she’d like those too!

RMH – I think most kids would eat them raw, too! I know I used to!

Babs – I know! She and The Pirate are opposites. He’s a bouncy ‘puppydog’ and she’s the laziest hound on the planet. Food? Actually, I think The Pirate would like a roast dinner with all the trimmings, and apple pie with custard to follow. Rumour has it that’s how his old lady (previous owner) used to feed him – just whatever she was eating. No wonder he was in bad shape, poor soul…

Jenn – She’s smart alright. The Pirate has to have a pill half hour before he eats, and OH couldn’t wake him up to take it this morning.

So he put the pill-in-a-treat to one side (together with the ‘dummy’ treat for The Princess), to try again in a few minutes.

She looked up to where he’d put them, then at The Pirate. Then she strolled over to his bed and barked in his face!

He woke for his pill, she got her treat. Job done. LOL!

Classic! I must try mine with pea-pods. They already tuck into raw carrot, celery and apple. And they are dogs, you now, not horses. They also hoover blackberries from the hedgerows.

That was just the loveliest video. What an adorable dog, actually no…princess. I bet if one pea rolled under her matress she would feel it and refuse to sleep on such a bump.

I’m just delighted to have found some more people who like raw peas. I often buy a bagful and just eat them like crisps or something, as a snack, or even for lunch. Everyone looks at me as though this is a really strange thing to do.

60/16 – I know! Mine graze like horses sometimes, too! I think they usually know what’s good for them, although some dogs will gorge on grapes, and that’s definitely not so good.

Moannie – Thank you! We think she’s adorable, of course, and so does she!

Daphne – It’s not strange at all. They are the strange ones. ;)

I love raw peas. I’m always sad at the end of fresh pea season. They make a great snack, which is also good for you! MUCH better than Cadbury’s chocolate buttons…
