You know how it can happen sometimes. Everything seems to go wrong at once, and not just to ourselves, but our friends and family too.
We all know there’s a major financial recession about to hit us, trample us into the dirt, and leave us for dead. We all know that the weather is on a bender and has got to the stage where it’s driving the porcelain bus all over the world. But I’m talking about the personal stuff. I’m talking about friends getting ill, and needing surgery. I’m talking about marriages breaking down, houses under threat, and sick animals not getting cured. I’m talking job stress, personal tragedy and people you love tearing their hair out and wailing ‘But what am I going to dooooo?‘
Right now, in my personal circle of friends and family, we have the following:
Two rotator cuff injuries, one scheduled for surgery this week, one probably needing surgery in the near future
One miscarriage, and three unplanned pregnancies
Two deaths and one tentative Alzheimer’s diagnosis
Two marriages experiencing serious difficulties and two failed
One waiting for transplant surgery
One recovering from surgery on both hands
One diagnosis of a degenerative eye disease
Three people with broken teeth
One major flare-up of inflammatory arthritic disease
One broken arm (healing, but still painful) and one possibly broken toe
At least three people in major financial trouble
A single parent having to relinquish her job to home-school her child because of complete failure in the school system
And I’m sure I’m missing something …
Oh, it works the other way too – there are times when the gods smile on us and everything just falls into place and life is all sunshine and roses, but sometimes those days seem very far away.
It’s no wonder that people used to blame these times on planetary misalignment or miscellaneous gods being angry and throwing a wobbly – sometimes that’s just what it feels like. Of course, these days we’re not so superstitious and we know that these things just happen. We know God hasn’t become so pissed with us that he’s tripping us up as we go downstairs, or suddenly adding twenty pounds to the weight we just picked up, or poking holes in our plumbing (I remember reading that after the Flood, He promised not to do that anymore… ), but I suppose it’s just possible that the Earth might occasionally pass through an area of space which contains … something … which has an impact on our daily lives. Super-negatively-charged Alien nano-particles of anti-matter enriched with marrowbone jelly or something. Who knows? Something as yet undiscovered which has strange effects on time, gravity and our feeble little brains?
Maybe the Hadron collider thingy they’re about to turn on today will bring us closer to understanding? That’s a vaguely comforting thought.
Or maybe it will cause those little black holes people are talking about and we’ll all get sucked out of the Universe and whirl away down the Plughole of Oblivion!
I’m pretty sure it won’t heal my shoulder, although I guess it might rip my arm off.
So I’m going to leave you with a joke I heard Billy Connolly tell this morning about two photographers in the Serengeti. They were taking video of a pride of lions, when the big male noticed them and began grumbling in their general direction. The grumbles became roars, as the cameramen continued filming, and then one began to take his boots off. He slowly reached into his bag, took out a pair of Nikes and still keeping his eye on the lion, put them on. His friend watched him in silence and then said ‘You’re wasting your time. There’s no way you can outrun that lion!’
And he said ‘Fuck the lion .. as long as I can outrun you, I’ll be fine!’
Well, you’ve got to laugh …

Sorry about all the misfortune. That’s such an overwhelming list. I’ll say prayers for your general circle.
And that is a seriously funny, albeit dark, joke. I think Jack Sparrow would approve.

There are times like this in my job, as well, where clients are all whipped up at the same time, and the world is chaos. I don’t know why it is. It makes you understand why folks used to blame it on a full moon.

I think it is the change of seasons… I have two sick people in my home and a sick cat.
I love Fall, but I hate the changes it seems to affect everyone with.
Here’s hoping your troubles will resolve soon, that things will quickly improve for you and yours. Chin up. Just remember, it can always be worse.

You must be referring to the Coincidence Negative Vortex Plasma. Worry not, it’s a relatively confined area of interspace and the Earth passes through it in a week or two. Just as long as we steer clear of the Reducto-Absurdum Pess-E-Mist Obliteration Field, we’ll be fine.
Somnambulists last blog post..Big Bang Day
So sorry to hear of all the misfortunes of your circle. I too will include everyone in my prayers. It is strange though how these troubles alway pile one upon another, upon another! I reckon it’s something in the water, or all the additives they shove in out cream doughnuts! :0)
Love that Joke, but our Billy can do no wrong in my house!
Things definitely do seem to all come at once. I wonder why that is, but not enough to want the risk of black holes everywhere!!
::poking holes in our plumbing (I remember reading that after the Flood, He promised not to do that anymore… ):: That really made me chuckle ;O)

Loved the joke by the way :O)

Um. I have no idea how you are handling ALL of THAT going on in your personal life with friends and family members. I would be sitting in the fetal position spoon feeding myself ice cream.
But you end it with a JOKE!! You are one STRONG individual!!
Kudos to your sense of humor!!

Awww are you sure you’re not a jinx? True tho, misfortune comes in bunches. I suppose good fortune does too but we tend not to notice it! In my world it’s things rather than people that get broken and not fixed – lights, plumbing, pool cleaners, tractors bla bla bla . . .good karma coming your way!

Hope your week gets better Jay loved the joke LOL
Janices last blog post..GETTING RID OF THE BODY
Ruth – Thank you! And yes, of course Jack would approve! Except he would wish he’d thought of it first! :p
Jenn – Exactly! My father-in-law was a great believer in the role of the Moon in our moods and problems.
Maureen – So sorry to hear you have sick people and a sick cat too! I hope they all get well soon. It’s tough sometimes, isn’t it?
Somnambulist – At last! Someone who has the answers! It must indeed be that negative vortex thingy you speak of! I’m glad to hear it will all be over soon, though, so thanks for that bit of useful info. And don’t worry – I always avoid Pess-e-Mists if I can. I find they bring you down so.
Grannie Grimble – Thank you!
You know, I never thought about the artificial cream in our doughnuts. Luckily, I never eat that stuff!
Babs – Yeah, I can do without black holes, too! LOL!
Meleah – Well, fortunately, some of all that crap is relatives of friends rather than my own personal crap, so while I still feel emotional about it, I don’t have to actually deal with it. The rest? Well, you don’t get a choice, so you deal. And jokes help.
Baino – Hmm… you may have something there. I am the common denominator. LOL! I should warn people to stay away!
Things round here seem to be functioning okay, thank heavens, except that when it rains, if we don’t pull the fuse for the pond (waterfall) out, all the power goes off. Might have to do something about that.
Janice – Thanks! Nice to see you over here!
So sorry about the misfortunes. Sometimes we are so helpless that even if we try things with all our heart and soul, they seem to turn the other way round. All we can do then is blame God and wait for things to settle down.
You will be in my prayers.
Scratch Bagss last blog post..Tuffy’s Story
Scratch – Well, I don’t feel helpless exactly, although it’s true that I can’t actually do a lot about most of these things. It’s more that I wonder why it seems to happen in ‘runs’ like this.
But maybe it’s just my turn?
whew that’s a list al right. Let me say I think it has been a rough year at least for me . I feel inundated for sure..sandy

Sigh….They say misery loves company, but you seem to be having a dinner party’s worth of it. Hang in there.
BTW, if you ever need to talk to me with regards to your friend awaiting transplant surgery, write me. I would be happy to answer any questions. I am also happy to answer any questions your friend may have regarding the experience.

Good lord, woman! I don’t even know what to say! Just hang in there and things will get better. Ice the shoulder!
Peace – D
Sandy K – I know you’ve had a very hard time. I think it’s amazing how cheerful and upbeat you remain, and how sweet your blog is. Hugs to you, my friend.
Mr N – That’s very kind of you, thank you! I’ll tell my friend you’ve offered and she if she’d like to ask anything. She herself is not the future transplant patient (it’s one of her immediate family) but I know she’s fretting.
River Poet – Thanks! I’ve had an ultrasound and x-rays now, and there is a definite tear, so it looks as if there may indeed be surgery in my future.
Just read your comment re Botton over on Shrinky’s. We live only 2 miles away! Small world!
Denises last blog post..
Denise – Hello, and welcome! It is a small world, isn’t it? I’ve never been there, but it’s been a recipient of local charity collections and it does seem so worthwhile!
I’ll pop over and check out your blog!
My thoughts are with you my dear from one who understands more than she ought.
I liken myself sometimes to Eeyore in A A Milne’s supernovels.
I too sometimes walk around with a black cloud over my head, raining on me – and the last few years have been truly dreadful – but some days there are rainbows that make me smile and keep going.
May your rainbows be with you. X
kates last blog post..Lazy Sunday Afternoon!!!
– Thanks, Kate. Actually, I don’t feel overwhelmed over all this, as much as bewildered. Maybe overwhelmed will come later. Maybe if I focus on the positive I’ll avoid it!
We had a dog we used to call ‘Eeyore’, my beloved first greyhound, the beautiful James. You can see him in this post. He was quite elderly when that was taken.
He was left behind by travellers, in a very bad state, and he never quite lost that ’something bad is going to spoil this happy dream in a moment, I just know it’ aura that he kept about him. We had many happy years with him – and most of the time he was very happy indeed – but he was always anxious, looking for something bad to happen, rather than the reverse. We still feel blessed to have had him though.
Oh he was a gorgeous boy wasn’t he? Bless him …. My son is a bit of an eeyore too – with good reason again. Maybe thats the best way way to survive x
