Here we are again on Macro Monday – and I have a nice easy one for you! This will no doubt come as a relief to you all.
Unless …
… Unless I have it wrong again and it isn’t easy at all! Looks easy to me, but, don’t they always?
Anyway, this week’s puzzle is a very familiar object, though perhaps a little more ‘up close and personal’ than you’re used to seeing it. Also, maybe, from a rather different angle. I bet you all have one though – or had one at some time or other. We have (let’s see … ) seven of this type, and at least four which are a whole lot more modern. I also have a lot which are basically the same thing, but don’t look much like this. They do perform the same basic function though – and no, I don’t need them all, I just like them, and I’m a bit of a squirrel.
People use these things in several forms. The way they look is as variable as a pair of curtains or a person’s choice of floor coverings – but just like those things, despite all the differences, when you see it, you know exactly what it is.
Take your best shot! Answers in the comments, if you think you know what it is, and I’ll be back tomorrow to enlighten you with a nice little picture link.
Well, there. Quite a few of you got this one! First one to get it right was Carletta – well done, Carletta! – and then we have Margie, Denise, DutchBaby, Baino, Granny Grimble, and Babs. In fact, well done, all of you!
There were those who decided against going with the right answer (you know who you are!) and then we have the witty ones, which I always love. Thanks to Sistertex, Silverback, Brinkbeestinenglish and Maureen for the laughs, and special thanks to Mara for managing to drag Johnny Depp into it! You all know how much I appreciate that!
For those who still don’t know what it is, go here, and all will be revealed! Later this evening you’ll be able to read in the comments exactly why there are cobwebs in there.
Thanks for playing!

Easy being a relative term, right? It’s either that or I am particularly obtuse!

Easy? I’m beginning to think I don’t know the definition to the word easy. I know from your clues that it probably can’t be this but for lack of a better guess at the moment I’m going to say the inside of a lampshade where the bulb goes. That’s the only thing it reminds me of.

A cobbweb holder!
Lamp was already taken….bird feeder.
sigh…I don’t know….again….

Easy? From your clues, the squirrel caught me but I still have no idea. Squirrels love nuts – it’s not a nut and they like to go through garbage pails though this does not look like one. I also could be way off base here. I’m stumped. I’m anxious to find out what it is.

If you drop it, will it break ?
Ok my stab in the dark is the back view of a plate holder. Mind you, whatever that one is holding doesn’t seem to be a plate and if that is a dusty web on there, well shame on your cleaning lady. Sack her.

My first thought was magazine rack because of the wiring. But then you said you had seven of them? And even if you were a bit of a squirrel, I thought that was a bit excessive. Oh, jellybeans on toast, you need all those magazine racks to keep all those magazines featuring Johnny Depp. So, magazine rack it is!

Just realised the cobwebs and for some reason I don’t think you will have cobwebs anywhere near Mr Depp. Plantholder was my second thought, so my second guess will be just that!
(Unless it’s something else completely and the only thing that was dirty was the lens on your camera, or even worse: my glasses)

I can see the cobwebs. Is it underneath a chair?
Nice:).
Regards.

See, the annoying thing is, it looks familiar. Or perhaps it’s only the cobwebs that look familiar. Oh I don’t know. Shoot me again please. I’m hopeless. ;-(

At first I thought it was the back of a picture frame, but now that I peeked at the others’ lampshade guesses, I think that is the correct answer.

Um, a place you sit plants? You’re so good with your descriptions too, being vague and all.

Ah hate being late because you’ll think I’m cheating but yes, I agree, the inside of a lampshade. Decorated with a few cobwebs, don’t you hate a macro lens sometimes?

Well This is a bit of a puzzle in more ways than one. I think this is the top of the lampshade showing the wire frame lying on the supporting frame of the lamp. If that is so, then the dark part is the view through the hole at the top of the shade. So why isn’t it illuminated by the camera flash? And I can’t belive that you would have cobwebs like the rest of us mortals. And if you did, would you photograph them? Am I taking all this too seriously. I fear I am. Perhaps it’s spaghetti that’s been thrown at the wall!

I apparently don’t know how to spell cobweb correctly…but… Thanks for stopping by my blog Jay. Love seeing you there!

I have no idea. I suck at these. But I will use the excuse that I am in Canada, and everything is on the other side of the road over there.
Pitiful excuse, eh?

Yes, I say it’s the lamp shade frame, taken from under the lamp shade, looking up and out of the top. I don’t know what all the white bits are though.

Could it be a plate hanger! A x
I would have never figured this one out! Carletta is an excellent guesser!

Everyone – Well, I promised to come back and enlighten you all, didn’t I?
Quite a few of you guessed that this was a lampshade, but I know the rest of you will be kicking yourselves – not that many people stick their heads up underneath a shade while the light is on, but just call me crazy. Lots of people do!
The reason I took this picture was that OH called me and told me there was a spider living in the lampshade. I had a look and was really quite impressed at the little guy’s cunning and strategy. You all know how moths and flies are attracted to light, after dark? Well this little spider was turning this to his (or her) advantage, by spinning a webb across the top of the shade, and criss-crossing around the bulb. He (or she) would hide somewhere and wait for some silly insect to fly in and get caught and then, there was dinner! I thought this was pretty clever and wanted to take a picture before sweeping his (or her) web away.
So, for those who wondered, the little light specks in this picture are the remains of insects, mostly wings and legs. And one can only hope that there are a few mosquito remains. I think there are!
Tammy – I guess you are right, in a way – it is an animal trap, but I’m not so sure about the ‘compassionate’ part!
Silverback – The short answer is ‘yes’! I’m pretty sure that if I dropped it it would break. Or maybe it would only dent? And I wouldn’t dream of sacking my cleaning lady, because then I’d have to do my own cleaning!!
Mara – Well, I am a squirrel, as I said. But it’s not magazine racks that I collect, but lamps. I have all kinds from oil lamps to little tea light holder lamps, totally enclosed milky opaque glass lamps to opium lamps, floor lamps to tiny decorative lamps.
Granny Grimble – Haha! Spaghetti indeed! LOL!
The reason the aperture of the lamp shows black is because of flash ‘fall-off’. The camera meters on the object you are focussing on, and provides enough light to illuminate it without blowing it out. In a dark room, this is not enough light to reach the background, so the distant parts of the frame will be underexposed and will appear black. It’s quite a useful thing to know, because you can use it deliberately to make an object stand out against a nice dark background.
Yeah! I can finally say I got one.
Thanks for fun on Mondays!!
