Do greyhounds run like the wind?

Just as well they were emptied early, huh?

My goodness it’s been breezy around here!  And OH just reminded me that it was about this time of year that the Great Hurricane of 1987 hit us, despite Michael Fish being so confident that it wouldn’t.  He seemed to think that the worst that would happen was that it would get ‘very windy’.   Ha!  But the nation still regards him with affection, which says something for his likeability, wouldn’t you say?

Anyway.  Here’s a short video of The Pirate having a little run today.  He’s thirteen years old, which according to my vet translates as being about ninety in human terms.  I only hope I’m as fit and happy if I ever reach that venerable age.

Oh, and the black thing which you can see flapping about in the corner towards the end is his lead, which I’m holding in my right hand.

The other things flapping in the breeze are The Pirate’s ears!

He’s spry for an “old pup”! LOL

I love them! I say more doggie videos, they’re adorable and put a huge smile on my face :)

    I love your voice too!

I love to see happy dogs. He certainly is spry for his age. And I replayed the video because I didn’t have the sound on the first time, and when I read DrowseyMonkey’s comment, I had to hear your voice. It adds something to reading your blog to know what your voice sounds like.

Oh I remember the hurricane so well. I lived in Kent at the time. Our street was untouched, yet every other street around us had it’s trees fall down like dominoes. Many falling through the houses. The local park was unbelievably devastated.

That was a lovely video. He certainly does still run like the wind :O)

P.S. I like your voice too, honest ;O)

You had a hurricane? My goodness! He’s a lovely old thing and sure is spry for his age. We have a 15 year old Labrador as well as the ‘spoiled one’ but he’s a little slower . . he’s excellent at tipping up sulo bins and raiding the contents however!

What Ruth said – I too love to see happy dogs!
And what a speed he can get to – amazing for his age.

I love to see greyhounds running for their own enjoyment. Taffy will get the wind up his tail and off he goes. Unfortunately I can’t let William off as he is too unpredictable and is likely to run out of the park. I need to find somewhere which is totally secure before I can even consider it :(

Oh he is gorgeous – they both are and the wind makes them so skittish…. We are fortunate we have an enclosed park so close by – Hippie loves to run on there. We should get them all together one weekend and let them meet!!

Ah, hahahahahaha! Those bins, glad to know I am not the only one this week. I live at the top of a huge busy hill, we trundle the bins up to the top of the drive for collection. Thank God I papered ours in giant sunflowers (Sweet Sam’s chore is to take the bins out, and the sunflower is his symbol, long story.. but anyways) I finally found them at the very bottom of the hill strewn about with countless others, in the middle of the busiest roundabout on the island.

Talking of islands, I had a call from Tesco’s – they couldn’t deliver my on-line shop, the boats couldn’t get in. Hightailing it down there, the shelves were empty, only canned goods left. I then joined the queue to snatch some bread fresh from out of the baker ovens. The joys of island life, huh?

Your pooch sure lives a charmed life, guess knowing how loved he is makes a difference, huh? Smile

Such a beauty Pirate is, and yes, runs like the wind, Jay! He made it across the screen in the blink of an eye! And he has the gait and spirit of a teenager! :) ) Both are so beautiful thanks to their adoring parents! btw, it sounded as if you were standing in a gale!

DM – If I’d known the damn camera was going to pick up my voice so well, I’d have kept mum! LOL!

Glad it made you smile! :)

Ruth – Agh! I hate my voice! And it was my ‘dog’ voice!! LOL!

Meleah – Thanks! I still don’t like my voice, but I’m happy that you do! ;)

Babs – Up in the MIdlands it didn’t trouble us too much. We lost one slate, if I remember rightly. But we had to travel down to Brighton during the next fortnight and we were stunned at the devastation.

You don’t have to say you like my voice just cos everyone else is.

    LOL!!

Baino – Yes, we did! And we ain’t used to them, so it came as a horrible shock, and it upended an awful lot of trees that would have been long gone in a more hurricane-prone area. Such an awful pity to see huge trees flat on the ground with their roots in the air.

Your lab raids bins? Well, well. What a surprise. Anyone would think labs liked to eat all the time, or something! ROFL! Fifteen is a great age for a lab though, isn’t it?

AnneDroid – He’s pretty good, isn’t he? I am so nervous about him because we lost our first greyhound at thirteen and a half. By that time he rarely broke out of a trot, of course … but I’m just so aware of how old The Pirate is. :(

Taffy’s Mum – We had one like that – Susan. She was what they called a ‘very keen dog’. She’d chase anything at all, so whenever she was offlead it had to be safely enclosed and she had to be muzzled.

It’s a shame, but you have to do what you have to do.

Kate – It would be great to meet up, wouldn’t it? I bet they’d get on well! After all, they’re all greyhounds! ;)

Shrinky – Ah, yes .. you do have a lot of weather on your little island, don’t you? I can imagine all those bins tumbled together (yours with the sunflowers, of course) in the middle of the roundabout! I’m still giggling!

Yep, that’s the downside to living over there, I guess. It was that kind of thing that decided us not to move there – at least, not just yet. Still looks like a good place to live though.

Jenn – He does, doesn’t he? He tires though. He’s completely crashed out in his sheepskin-lined bed now. Loved? I’ll say!

  13. on 24 Oct 2008 at 5:25 pm13Jay

    Petra – Thank you!

If you think that’s fast, you should see a young greyhound run! It’s literally poetry in motion. The Pirate has a very bumpy ‘old dog’ run now, but a young dog is jaw-droppingly fast, and very fluid. Even The Princess can get up a lick of speed now and then … but mostly she just doesn’t want to. LOL!

They are beautiful chaps…I’ve already determined that the next animal to come live with us will be another rescue…hopefully a Greyhound…but we’re open to opportunity

Did you mean to imply that your lovely greyhounds dash out of the wheelie bins on a count of ten?!! That is how it looked to me! But then, I’ve been a bit poorly ;)

    Sandi – Thank you!

All rescues are good. Doesn’t matter what. I’m biased towards greyhounds, but it’s true that they don’t suit everyone.

Moon – Yes, it was bloody cold! I had to put my thick winter coat on!! And you have 94 degrees?

Go away. I hate you. gif

Suburbia – It was meant to be a visual joke! Well spotted! But no, we don’t actually make them start out of the bins! LOL!

  18. on 25 Oct 2008 at 6:28 pm18petra michelle

Can imagine the young greyhounds, Jay! Aren’t they one of the fastest animals? hahaha, I don’t even want to think of myself now to what I was like at 20! So, my empathy with Princess. :) )
Jay, thank you for your kind comment and vote on “The Good,
The Bad…” The winners were Clint Eastwood as Blondie, Jack Palance as Tuco, and Jack Nicholson as the skellie’s voiceover. Hope you enjoy “House on Haunted Hill?” and are having a wonderful weekend! :) )

Been a bit busy so far this week but I will be over to check out your new post!

Sandy – But what is a County Educator Sheriff?? Are you a Sheriff, or an educator attached to the Sheriff’s office? Enquiring minds need to know! :)

Maureen – Thanks – I guess we all love to hear other people’s voices but aren’t so keen on our own! LOL!

    aww he’s a darling pirate.

and yeah Jay you do have a great voice, with or without your ‘doggie tone’ tuned in. It was the first thing I remember thinking when you first ever called me.

Jeni – Really? It just sounds unfeminine to me – and rough. LOL! Thanks! You’ve made my evening. ;)
