ABC Wednesday – the letter O
Posted on October 29, 2008 in Johnny Depp, Life, the Universe and Everything by Jay41 Comments »

I had a lot of good ideas for today’s ABC Wednesday post – I did!  But I’ve been out all day, and then there was the Colts/Titans game this evening and it’s funny how time slips away, isn’t it?

But worry not!  I do have some nice ‘O‘s for you, and I think we’ll start with the clever ones and then it’ll be all downhill from there.

PictureOne

See that little creature?  She’s a Dark Bush Cricket.   You want to know how I know it’s a she?  Well, that curved thing at her back end isn’t a sting, and it isn’t a decorative hook, it’s an ovipositor.  She’ll use that to place her eggs deep into the soil, where they’ll be safe until they hatch.

Now, I was going to show you a picture of Johnny Depp’s olecranon process, but I couldn’t find one.  Of all the pictures I took of him at the Dead Man’s Chest premiere, when he was wearing short sleeves, not a single one shows his elbow!  So you’ll have to have his olfactory organ instead!

Picture2

There it is!  I thought you’d like to have views showing both sides, because it’s really rather a cute nose, don’t you think?

And talking of Johnny Depp, there is just one movie with a title beginning with ‘O‘ -

Picture3

Once Upon A Time In Mexico, in which he plays a very smooth operator, Agent Sands.

And talking of movies, here’s one of my favourite pieces of jewellery.

PIcture7

Can you guess what it is? No?

It’s an opium tools necklace. It may not have been intended to be a necklace, more probably it was hung on a belt, chatelaine-style, but it makes a very pretty necklace and makes a nice soft tinkling sound, too.   The little round piece is actually a little box for keeping a small supply of opium in, and the tools were used in the process of preparing it for smoking and perhaps for cleaning the pipe with afterwards. Or so I’m told.  I wouldn’t know!

Here’s something else which doesn’t get much use.

Picture5

It’s my overlocker.   If you live in the USA, you’ll call it a serger, but over this side of  The Pond, it’s an overlocker, or overlock machine.  The reason it doesn’t get much use?  I hate to admit it, but I’m nervous of it.  It goes very fast, and it has four reels of thread and a very sharp blade that moves up and down in a blur of viciousness right next to my fingers!   Also, since it trims the seams it stitches as it stitches them, there’s little room for error.  I have used it.  I have.  But just not very much.

Maybe if I remembered to take my vitamins and supplements my nerves would be steadier.  At least I do make sure I get enough in the way of Omega 3/6/9 oils.  I take the capsules, but I also rather like the seed mix sprinkled onto my cereal.

Picture7

Of course, I’ve stopped buying the stuff with hemp seeds in, since I broke a tooth on one a month or so ago.  There’s only so far I’ll go in the pursuit of steady nerves.  It’s a bit of a Catch-22, isn’t it?  You need steady nerves for the dentist, but the omega-rich seeds you eat might send you there.

OH Jay,I hate my serger! I am afraid of it, too lol…I keep trying to give it to people who look at it with the spools of thread on a stand overhead and get the idea when they ask for a demo and I approach the thing with awe and shock…that it may be a bit dangerous.lol…liked the J.pics…and guess what? THIS side of the pond, it’s still Tuesday!

When I worked as an embroidery designer, they used industrial overlocking machines. They didn’t have blades in them. How strange that they do that to machines for the home. It sounds down right dangerous to me!

Ah, thank you. You never fail to give me a well-needed dose of Johnny…. olfactories and all.

I love that little necklace. Not a jewellery person myself but I like pieces that can start a conversation although Im not fond of Opals! (had to get a clean ‘O’ word in there to tidy up the place!) Oh, he has a lovely little schnozz!

well that is an odd selection of O’s by anyone’s observations.

think I saw one of those opium whatsits on Bargain Hunt recently.

I won’t be buying one of those vicious machines – I still use my old hand operated Singer!
Love your collection of “O” words, and thanks for your kind visit and comment.
Now I have to change hats and comment as a member of the ABC Team, to thank you for your fun and interesting posts and continued participation. I just wish I could have come up with some witty “O” words to use here!

Sandi – I think a lot of people are nervous of their overlockers. It’s the blade, and the complication of the threading patterns, which are different according to what stitch you need.

We’re ahead of you here! And I see posts from those in Australia and New Zealand who are way ahead of us! So funny!

Bob – But I don’t have pictures of those! In fact, I have friends in both places, but I’ve never visited them at home. I’ve always met them somewhere else – like LA or Delaware.

Meleah – Yes, fish oils contain omega essential fatty acids – but I take the vegetarian ones because I’m allergic to fish.

Moon – It was after midnight when I posted – I’m pretty sure of that! But I usually try to make sure it’s up last thing on Tuesday because I tend to get up rather late.

Don’t think I didn’t think of ‘orgasm’. But you know, it’s kind of hard to find a suitable picture for a family meme. Tut, tut, now you’ve gone and messed the place up again. LOL!

Babs – All of the domestic ones have blades – they make the seam and finish it in one operation, you see. Maybe the embroidery overlockers are different?

Maureen – I only wish he were mine to hand out in doses! I’d be a pretty popular person, would I not? ROFL!

Baino – *Gasp* How can you be Australian and not like opals? I thought that wasn’t allowed!! LOL! I actually rather like them, and it’s my birthstone, too. I do have an opal ring, but it’s rather ornate and catches on things, so it’s only for ‘going out’. And I couldn’t find it to photograph for the ‘O’s!

Aileni Noyle – I’ve already thought of two more that I could have included! My dogs’ octopus toy, and Mr. October – oooh, and ‘oil painting’ too. Oh well. Maybe next year!

RiverPoet – Mmm! Yes, he did! He smelled of something light and citrusy!

Gerald – You did? Is it valuable? Do I need to stick in in a bank vault or something? :D

Dragonstar – I will get to grips with it!! ONE day! LOL!

Thanks – I wonder if I will get you in my quota of blogs to comment on? ;)

Oh you don’t eat bird seed, do you? How terribly healthy.

    I bet Johnny doesn’t.

That’s a clever gadget the cricket has.

The sewing machine I just blurred over. me and sewing don’t get on.

When I was in Thailand, I bought several little elephants, one slightly bigger than the next. Turns out they are opium weights. Who knew the drug trade could produce such pretty little trinkets.
PS Please ignore my brother Moons comments. I have decided that there must have been some horrible mix up at the hospital and that he is not really related to me at all.

From ovipoisters to opium tools, Once Upon a Time in Mexico
to an overlocker and omega 3. You couldn’t get more eclectic than that, Jay! Loved it!
You know? If you hadn’t mentioned, I never would have

A very clever post for “O”! I always thought a serger would be a good idea, but I can see why you don’t use it often–I would be a little intimidated, too. And as often as I rip out seams, it probably wouldn’t be very helpful:)

I agree Johnny Depp’s olfactory organ is quite cute!

I love the fancy words you used in this post to get your Os in.

“Overlocker!” I will have to remember that one. I think here we would refer to it, if not as a sewing machine generally, as a “Singer” (Singer being a popular brand.)

  22. on 29 Oct 2008 at 3:57 pm22Moon

DBM – You cut me deep !

Just trying to open up the Meme to all audiences !!!

  23. on 29 Oct 2008 at 4:37 pm23Jay

Liz – I’m pretty sure you’re right! I can’t see Johnny eating birdseed, either! But I’ve heard it’s good for reducing menopause symptoms without drugs. One has to try these things! :P

DBM – I’ve seen those little decorative opium weights. They’re on my shopping list for some time in the future. I’d like some scales too!

    You’re disowning Moon? But he’s cute! ;)

Ellenb – Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! I’ll pop over and see yours too, later!

kbguy – That’s what I like about ABC Wednesday – I usually come across things – and this week words – that I didn’t know about!

Petra – Well, you wanted some English actors brought in! Just doing my job… ;)

Rose – Sergers are a great idea, but they do take some getting used to. You’d think someone who doesn’t blink at using a pressure cooker could manage a fancy sewing machine, wouldn’t you? I must get to grips with it, because neatening seams is not my favourite part of sewing.

Ruth – I certainly will have to mind my Ps and Qs! Especially with ‘P’ coming up and Moon popping in! LOL!

Jenn – We used to call sewing machines ‘Singers’, back when that or ‘Jones’ was about all you could get! My Mum had one, and I have a couple of old hand sewing models. I rather like them, and used one to teach my sons to sew before they were old enough to be allowed loose on the electric!

Moon – You just watch it, or you may find yourself censored! LOL!

BearNaked – Ah, yes, it would be. One reason I don’t sew as much is an injured neck, but another is that I have a huge number of floaters and in dim light it’s difficult to see detail. I sympathise!

    Awang-Malaysia – Thanks – I enjoyed yours, too!

Lily – Thanks, I’m glad to make you laugh! :)

Scrappy – Aaah … Edward! Mmm. Sadly, the guy they’ve chosen for Edward doesn’t fit my idea of what he should look like – he’s too sharp-featured. Sadly – very sadly – I much prefer their James! I think that might spoil the movie for me, don’t you think?

I’m halfway through New Moon at the moment and I love it! Now, the big question is, will Stephanie Meyer do a J K Rowling, and let the storyline mature as the characters do?

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, OH is a very tolerant husband and all round Jolly Nice Chap!

Jay..thank you for visiting my O post about the chickadee with the deformed bill. You were much more clever than I with the letter O. It has made me wonder where my sewing machine is…LOL…

  38. on 30 Oct 2008 at 4:22 pm38Angi

Yep – LOTS of tornadoes! In the 4 1/2 years I lived there before, we had several that were about 40 miles away, and one that came within about 8 miles of our house. It sounds like a long ways away, but those things can move FAST. One of the ones that was about 40 miles away, wiped out half of the GM plant in Oklahoma City. It was very strange to drive by it later, it looked like a giant bulldozer had driven over half the buildings!

  39. on 30 Oct 2008 at 4:53 pm39Jay

Leslie – Sorry – I missed this earlier! Thank you – I love it too! It’s a little bit hippyish, isn’t it?

Michelle – Why, thank you? But you had such beautiful photos of the little chickadee!

Angi – *Shakes with fear!* I don’t think I could live anywhere where tornadoes could happen. I’d be terrified!

I’m striking Oklahoma off my list of ‘places to live’! LOL!
