ABC Wednesday – the letter ‘I’
Posted on March 18, 2009 in Johnny Depp, Life, the Universe and Everything, The Home Front by Jay30 Comments »

I think ‘I‘ is one of the most difficult letters, especially if, like me, you tend to post a whole truckload of things for ABC Wednesday.  I have one or two ‘I‘s in my picture folders, but I think I might have posted them last time around, so I’m going to have to go trawling for more.  And I know some of you are wondering how I’m going to get Mr Depp in here today.  Have patience!

I think I’ll start with a little Italian.

ABCW-I3

I have decided to try to learn Italian.  Son No. 1 has an Italian girlfriend and he is learning the language, so I’m going to sign up for lessons at the local college after Easter, and we’ll both have someone to practice conversation with.  In the meantime, I’ll be having a go with these DVDs to see if I can pick up the odd word or two.

Talking of acquiring information, here is my iron.  You might notice it doesn’t appear to be very well-used, and this is because I’ve taken note of the instructive little plaque sitting there next to it.

ABCW-I2

It’s incumbent upon us to make sure everyone is aware of the dangers, don’t you think? I mean, those left in ignorance might hurt themselves! Remember, my shoulder injury was incurred while shopping, and if shopping is dangerous, how much more so must housework be?  I shudder to think!

Talking of my shoulder injury, I went to see the physiotherapist today.  He’s very pleased with my progress -  in fact he’s so pleased that he said I could stop using the pulley, and stop doing the upside-down ‘t’s in the air (did I tell you about the little ‘t’s?  No?  Oh well, never mind.  I don’t have to do those anymore anyway) and just concentrate on strength training.  He showed me what appear to be some lightweight isometric exercises.  I have to do shallow ‘press-ups’, standing up and using a door.  This is supposed to help me square my shoulders up and stretch the joint capsule a little.  Oh, and he said I could go riding again! Yay!!

We usually go to a Western stable where they have a big barn for our lessons, so we ride indoors.

ABCW-I1

The horses are very kind and well-trained and don’t pull, so I should be okay, I think.   I wouldn’t want to do more damage to my shoulder. One operation is quite enough thank you.

Here’s the very thing that was used on me.  Well, okay, not this exact one, but one just like it.

ABCW-I4

It’s a scalpel, and it’s used to make incisions.

This guy was good at incisions, but not really surgical ones, even though he was a barber.   You did know that barbers did surgery in bygone days, didn’t you?

ABCW-I5

However, Sweeney Todd’s ‘patients’ didn’t tend to recover too well.

On the other hand, this guy was a policeman, hunting down another incision specialist – Jack The Ripper.

ABCW-I6

His name is Inspector Abberline.  By all accounts a very clever man, but not clever enough, because the real Jack was never caught.

This one, on the left of this picture, is an alien.  Nothing to do with incisions at all.

ABCW-I7

However, the movie we know as The Astronaut’s Wife was called ‘Intrusion‘ in France.

While the French movie that we know as ‘Happily Ever After’, was actually called ‘Ils Se Marierent‘ in French.

ABCW-I8

Confused yet?  Well, at least we managed to get Johnny Depp in here, didn’t we?  I don’t know about you, but I’m happy!

And I bet you want to know what happened to that poor frog’s candles, don’t you?

And that is about the funniest “I” using posts I’ve ever read! Thanks for a great laugh at the end of another cold dark day! This is terrific! Thanks, and happy “I” day!

It was Irresistible not to laugh. I was wondering how you would get Mr Depp In there, but you managed brilliantly. And the second photo: my sentiments exactly!

I like your philosophy about housework–I think my iron may have rusted:) So sorry about your shoulder. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better, but best of all, it gave you the segue to get Johnny in there! Thanks for the chuckles to start my morning!

    LOL
I love the ‘learning Italian’ without reading, writing and effort. Multo bene!
I’m so in one line with you, we could be living parallel lives I think. I’m even beginning to really like Johnny Depp. And you can ride a real horse again!!!!!! Yippeeeeeee!!!!! How exciting.

    Great news about your shoulder.
(and I didn’t know dogs could see colour, you had me chuckling about yellow-toy-loving-dog, cane pazzo!)

Sylvia Kirkwood – I’m happy to have cheered you on a dark day! Thanks for the kind comment!

Suzanne – Scary? Oh, you mean the scalpel and the homicidal maniacs? Oh .. them! Hahaha! Sorry about that!

    Sandy – Thanks, Sandy! :)

Sistertex – Thanks! I’m glad you like it here!

    Mara – Of course I got Mr D in there! Don’t I always? :D

When I saw that little plaque I just had to have it. It’s perfect! I have another that says ‘I only have a kitchen because it came with the house’. LOL!

Rose – I’m always glad to make someone chuckle! And it’s good to know there are other people who Do Not Iron. ;)

Carolyn – Nice to see you! I’m glad I made you smile today!

Carolina – Tut tut, what would Mr Data say, having you desert him for Johnny? ROFL! Oh – I got a ‘Fully Functional’ pin in the mail today – so funny, I think it will always remind me of you.

It used to be thought that dogs could only see shades of grey, but according to Stanley Coren, we now know they have very limited colour vision. They can’t distinguish between reds and greens, but they can spot blues and yellows. I guess that explains The Pirate’s obsession with yellow toys – they were the ones he could see best! His eyesight wasn’t great, bless him.

Nicely put together there! Everytime I see you on a horse I feel the urge to run up the back paddock and swing the leg over (not sure my old boy could cope with that these days he’s well and truly in retirement!) Glad the shoulder’s on the mend . .I ricked mine through horse riding! As for Ironing, sometimes a necessary evil but I’ve become a legend in the art of ‘folding’!

  12. on 18 Mar 2009 at 9:30 pm12Jenn Thorson

Ah, Jay- you always make me smile. I’m glad to hear the shoulder is coming along nicely! And thanks for working Mr. Depp in there. That makes me happy, too.

Funnier and funnier…I did, however, think that Depp might be lost – shoulda known better. And yes, the candle, the candle. Something is wrong but I’m thinking it’s okay. The last time my iron saw movement was when it fell out of the closet too near my foot for comfort so it’s been reassigned to the nether regions.

What a lot you got in that ‘I’ post. The iron sign cheered up my day not to mention the gorgeous Depp. I too have had a crock shoulder but fortunately only needed a year’s physiotherapy and not surgery. Who would know that a tug of war with a labrador would cause that. Good luck with the horse riding.

I do want to know – I saw them and just had to chuckle.

And the iron too – it’s my most dreaded piece of housework, and I took your sign’s advice long ago regarding that chore. My iron has been used maybe a dozen times in all my 27 years of marriage – it still looks new!

    Great post!!

Your shoulder must be doing MUCH better if you’re allowed to ride again! That’s excellent!

I am curious what you think of your “Learn Italian” DVDs (if you have started them yet).. I want to pick up a little French before the summer and I’m sort of on the hunt for a good short course.

Somnambulist – Oh dear – I hope you got through that, whatever it was, okay? My sympathies!

Baino – You need to get a younger horse! Did you fall off and hurt your shoulder?

I do the folding thing, too. I find if you never buy linen, tumble everything dry and then fold instantly, it works pretty well.

Jenn T – I’m happy to be of service, especially where Mr Depp is concerned! Tee hee.

Tumblewords – The candles got a little too warm left on a windowsill during a hot summer, but I kind of liked them droopy and left them. They amuse me. LOL!

Funny thing is, my iron gets used more by my son these days. He often pops round with some project he’s making, or a pair of trousers to iron.

Joy – Ah .. well, labs are strong dogs! There’s a trick to stopping them pulling – we had to do that for our first rescue dog. He pulled like a train, bless him. Took us three days to cure him. ;)

I’m glad you didn’t need the repair!

Reader Wil – I’m always happy if I can bring a smile! :)

Kml – I left Mr Frog on a windowsill in full sun. His candles drooped … but I like him like that!

    Lily – Thank you! :)

Picture Each Day – Yes – I’m so happy! I’m a little apprehensive, but looking forward to getting back up on a horse.

I haven’t tried that Italian course yet, but there’s a site which does podcasts which I have tried and it’s quite good. You could try the French lessons – you can find them here.

Marie – You teach French? I can understand a little French, and get the gist of quite a lot of text, but I can’t speak it! Is that odd?

EM – The Astronaut’s Wife certainly has its moments. It was slated when it came out, and it’s not usually top of a Depp fan’s list, although I do have one friend who adores it. But it’s not bad at all. Depends if you like movies about alien possession, I guess … or if you are a rabid Johnny Depp fan. ;)

  23. on 19 Mar 2009 at 11:56 am23Jay

Rosebud – How wonderful! Does it make it easier to trace your family history? I can’t imagine what it would be like to look at a place like that and know my ancestors built it!

    Thanks for dropping in! :)

    I’m confused…lol

  25. on 19 Mar 2009 at 9:21 pm25Dragonstar

You’ve done well this week, you’ve managed a load of Depps! Love the candles – my sister left one on her bathroom windowsill when she went away for a week, and it drooped into a rather suggestive shape ;)

Those candles looked like legs to me! Legs waving in the air, like someone doing the bicycle!

And like you, I can always, always find a way to fit Johnny in!

When you mentioned barbers doing surgery, it made me wonder if he ever got the Itch to read the antique barbering book I sent to him when he was filming Sweeney Todd at Pinewood Studios?

    I’ll wonder till Infinity.

Krizcpec – Hahaha! My work here is done! LOL!

Dragonstar – Yep, that’s what happened to my candles!

Jenny – Oh, I bet he did! You know how much he reads – and as a reader yourself, you must know how irresistible it is to open a book that’s been put into your hands! I’m sure he read it! He seems to like history, too. ;)

Bicycling! Now I’ll have that stuck in my mind when I look at him! LOL!

Uh .. not Johnny, the frog. Although … *Snigger*
