Well. According to the stated rules on the Illustration Friday site, I can still call it Illustration Friday because the idea is that while the prompt is issued on Friday, you have all week to complete the artwork.
This week the prompt word is ‘Edge’. I doubt that it will surprise anybody who knows me well that I have chosen a knife for this one.
From my beloved set of Robert Welsh kitchen knives, this may be my favourite, although the next one along with the broader blade is pretty damn nice, and it’s hard to choose between them. Come to that, the little teeny one with the short pointy blade always pleases me, too. They are GREAT knives, quite the best I’ve ever owned, and they sharpen well.
And the way that beautifully curved handle sits in the palm is a real pleasure.
I’ve done my best with this one, though all I had was copy paper and my set of Derwent artist pencils and a crappy rubber shaped like a book. Truth is, it’s been years and years since I did any real drawing and I’m out of practice. I’m hoping this challenge will help to change that!
For more interpretations of ‘Edge’, please visit Illustration Friday! What you find there may surprise you!

Very nice Jay! I might have known you were an artist too
Babs´s last [type] ..1960′s memorabilia
Jay, you totally blew me away with this illustration.
OMG…I didn’t realize you were an artist too!?!?
Faaaaaaaabulous illustration!

Ron´s last [type] ..Midtown Diner: La Boheme Style
Very sharp image, Jay!
Rob Lenihan´s last [type] ..Danger Zone
Babs and Ron – Aw, thanks for the kind words. Funny thing though, I don’t think of myself as an artist, just someone who occasionally draws stuff. I sometimes think I’m working towards being an artist, but to call myself that feels somewhat presumptuous.
Rob – Ha! Thanks!
Jay…This is so beautiful to me. It’s interesting that you chose “a little thing.” I think you must actually walk the talk, my friend.
Are you a Downton Abbey fan? Seasons 3 starts in the US tonight, and I am so excited! My daughter has been home for Christmas break (returning to school today) and hadn’t seen it. She bought me Seasons 1 & 2 for Christmas and we watched (I re-watched) them over her break. She is now a Downton Abbey fan. Have you ever been to signals.com? They have t-shirts where you identify with one of the sisters. She wants an “I am an Edith” t-shirt. If you are not a Downton Abbey fan, everything I just said is gibberish.
Lori – What Remains Now´s last [type] ..Things To Help Me Focus
Lori – Yep, find pleasure in small things. I told ya!
I haven’t seen Downton Abbey, but I do love historical series, done well, and this looks to be a good production, with an excellent cast. I think I might actually invest in the first series – thanks for that!
Awesome job! Love the subtle shading on the blade. Wish I had your artistic talent!
HermanTurnip´s last [type] ..When Heroes Fall
Absolutely FABULOUS, Jay!!
meleah rebeccah´s last [type] ..My Next Big Thing
Herman Turnip – Thanks! The blade was difficult.
You sure you don’t have artistic talent? It’s 1% inspiration and 99% labour, you know! And an awful lot of the work is pure technique, which must be learned, either by being taught, or by practice. And more practice. And then when you think you can’t do any more – a little bit more practice! Oh .. and knowing when to stop – which to me, is the hardest part of all!
Meleah – Aw, thanks, sweetie! I appreciate the kind words!
Beautiful image!!!!!
I sense a common theme! Excellent rendering…I like the highlights you acheived on the handle.
Theo Padavano´s last [type] ..edge
Marina Salomone – Thanks!
Theo Padavano – Yes! You drew a knife too, and also in pencil! Great minds …
Thank you for your kind words!
Very lovely, very clever and very you.
Gosh… I’m blown away by your drawing skills. That is a beautiful drawing of a knife. I’m doing a standing ovation for you right now.
A good knife is such a wonderful thing to have. I have a friend who loves cooking and has such crappy knives to work with, it is almost unbelievable. She helped me in the kitchen once and I gave her one of my heavenly Japanese knives to dice an onion with. She didn’t dare to use it, she was afraid she’d slice her fingers. She preferred one of those small potato peeling knives. Uch!
carolina´s last [type] ..And there I was…
Jeni – Thanks! Yep, you get it!
Carolina – Wow, thanks, Carolina! Not sure I’ve ever had a standing ovation before!
You probably know this, but your friend is mistaken in refusing to use a good quality sharp knife. It’s far more dangerous to use a crappy, un-sharp one, because they can slip. And then if they do cut you, they bruise and tear as well, so it doesn’t heal so well. I know my knives, me!
